Sometimes I just like to play alone :)

What is the best class for soloing?

I just like to play casually and don't need to level fast, I just like to play to kill time and have a good time.

for grinding, probably necro or druid.

For soloing named targets or something rather probably shaman or enchanter.

Do you like spamming buttons?
Do you like running in circles?
Do you like living on the edge of your seat, knowing one wrong move could end your characters life?

Yes? :)

Then bard is the class for you! :D

Necromancers have it easiest by far. Mages and bards level faster, shamans and chanters are more versatile. But it's hard to die as a solo necro. At the worst, you FD and gate away. If you want to be able to go pretty much anywhere by yourself, necro is the way to go.

Bards and mages do level faster..

but bards level fastest of all. Just a fact. The only downtime is spawn timer.

I think the Nerco also is probably the best. If they had their own sow and could port they would have every trick in the book in EQ. There is no end to what a Necro can do. A Necro is the Swiss Army Knife of EQ. I would guess more people use a Necro to farm high end gear then any other class on P1999.

But they are an Evil class on paper so not a lot of friendly places to go. Mine is a Iksar which I think is the best way to go for the re gen. And you really need J Boots to use them well. Where a Druid, Shaman, Bard have their own sow.

Depends what you mean by soloing:
- Taking big targets: shaman and enchanter
- Leveling speed: bard followed (a fair way away) by necro, magicians, druid and wizards
- Farming dungeons: enchanter or necro
- Good all 'rounders (as in having access to a lot of variety): druid or necro

Necro...they can solo good and take out big targets with the right strategy. Some people here are saying for big targets choose shaman/enchanter, but, trust me, a good necro can do big targets too (a level 60 one).

I personally prefer to play shaman but I know that necros just barely edge them out, overall, in the solo department.

I'd say monk or shaman. As most of the time after soloing for a while, you'll find a partner and the xp will be better with them anyway.

I think Necro it is then!

I group just fine with other chars, so I want something I can head out on my own with, from time to time.

Thanks all!

surprised it took to the middle of the second page for someone to say druid, which is a ridiculously good solo class

I have to say Bard. IMHO Bard is by far the best class in the game period.

If you have twink cash...hard to beat a monk.....esp if you have a shammy buddy to buff ya!

Enchanter for sure. You can invis, invis vs. undead, clarity, lull, mez. You can take down casters easy by using mez and nuke. If you run out of mana you just mez and med. Easy as pie.

I have played both a Necro and Monk into the 20's and it seemed like my Monk leveled faster. Now that I am in my low 30's, it actually feels like I am leveling faster than my teens. Zero downtime is nice, unless you considering binding wound downtime. Feign death is nice because you can try new things and if it doesn't work out, just feign death.

Druid is a good solo class, but Necro is better (assuming getting around is not a big issue). Druids were even better on Live in some periods. On the classic (and correctly so) version of emulated code on P99, three "nerfs" make Druids far less powerful than they can be:

1) Most dot stacking not allowed.
2) Forward-moving mobs take 2/3 dot damage.
3) Root overwrites snare, instead of existing simultaneously.

Of the three items above, I believe only nerf "number 3" will see an eventual reversal on this server (that's if I remember right - I researched it some time ago). Nevertheless, the Druid is still a great solo class, particularly from 53 on. Heh.

Based on my experience from the old EQ days (Warrior and Cleric to 65, Druid to mid 40s, Wizard, Necro, Bard and Shaman to 30s-40s), you can solo very effectively with a Necro, Bard, Druid or Shaman. Positives and negatives:

1) If you have the room to kite, you can solo almost anything. You basically have a "Selo evac" if you get in trouble (can outrun almost everything in the Kunark and Velious world). The downside is you are not an effective soloer in dungeons and cramped areas.

2) Druid. Can travel easy to "solo spots" and can evac when in trouble. Nice dots, decent nukes and of course snare and root.

3) High end Shamans can solo anywhere IMHO. Insane damage dots, ability to heal yourself, slow, etc.

I hear well equipped monks can solo all the way to 60. That's pretty impressive for a pure melee class.

When you say DoT stacking is not allowed, what exactly does this mean for the druid? Epic clicky? magic based dot? fire based dot? do these not stack?

It means that if two druids cast stinging swarm on the same mob, then only one of them will work. This was a big problem for druids/shammys/necros on classic raids, because having a 3rd or 4th necro on a raid didn't really bring much to the table. This was fixed in either SoL or PoP on live.

In other words it doesn't mean anything while soloing?

Enchanters are amazing at soloing, plus they can do so much more. If you ever want to not be bored, I highly suggest one. If you dont feel like soloing, you're always welcome in a group. If you want to help people level, you can do that. Basically free to do whatever, and so very necessary.

Epic mage, hands down.

For leveling, probably a necro
