In 1983, the name of the language was changed from C with Classes to C++ (++ being the increment operator in C). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%2B%2B)

Usual filename extensions .h .hh .hpp .hxx .h++ .cc .cpp .cxx .c++

It should have been named '++C', since in the statement 'C++' the C is evaluated and then incremented, but in '++C' its incremented first then evaluated. So really C++ would be the same as C.
