Looking for an answer to the original question.
TBC is the sweet spot between World of Grindcraft (Vanilla) and World of Burstcraft (Wrath). In Vanilla you have to use /script for /startattack and other such quality of life issues that were resolved in TBC (and before the experience of leveling/PvP was "cheapened" so to speak IMHO).
...waht
you definitely did not play vanilla right

Played text MUDs, Meridian 59 and UO before EQ and I thought The Burning Crusade was WoW's finest moment. Not everyone enjoys world PvP or trying to coordinate 40 man raids.
Although AQ20 and ZG were nice additions before TBC. Needing 40 people was just too many.

I got to rank 11, which I think was Lieutenant General? But I'm not sure I had fun doing it.

What was not superior were pigeonholed class roles, class/faction imbalances (OP shaman)
You misspelled Paladin.

You mean people who had connections and illegally traded honor with the other faction all the way to top rank.
