View Full Version : My EQ memories (in detail)

For no apparent reason I decide to write this huge post about my EQ memories, specifically those I remember in great details.
Feel free to post yours.
------------------------------------------------------------
0. How it all started. My RPG background mostly included Diablo and Baldur's Gate (which I never finished cause at some point difficulty got too much for me and I got bored). I was out of good game to play for more than a month and started looking at Ultima Online, when suddenly I read review about EQ on Gamespot.com. I still remember one specifically large and detailed review posted by a person who playing a Druid. The review must have been at least 20 pages long, and kept reading it over and over, and finally got hooked.
I have purchased the game at my local BestBuy and headed home.
I remember the very beginning of the Tutorial, where when you start on the little bridge, your controls are locked so you cannot go past the tutorial npc, wihotu taking to him first. I remember being shown how to sell, bank, and fought a skeleton at graveyard. When tutorial was over, only then I realized there was a huge patch I had to download before I could get into the game - thank God for the brand new USR 56k modem! But finaly, the game loaded...
From my experience playing Baldurs Gate, I have made a conclusion that all the non human races are silly, and all their special abilities are weird and stupid, and generally do not worth their stat penalties (in BG humans had the largest stat pool due to having 0 special abilities). And of course Warrior was the only good class (paladins and rangers were just underpowered in melee compared to warriors, and casters just sucked - that was my experience from playing BG. It was utterly wrong of course, but this what I had in my mind at the time)
So with above in mind, I have proudly made a Human Warrior, Agnostic, starting in Qeynos...
1. So it began. I was standing in a tavern and there were some npcs around me. later i found out it was the Fish Ale tavern. I equipped my sword, and went out of the door.
It was night time outside. It was dark and raining. I could barely see 10 feet away, but street lights were enough to make out buildings around me. The lightning was rocking and the feel of a full 3D world with environmental details like rain and lightening forever left their impression on me. This is how I remember my first 5 minutes into my long EQ life.
So I have read my GM note, somehow found the Arena and got my guild tunic. Some time later I made it to North Qeynos, and finally into the park area where I started my hunting.
2. Fast forward to level 3. After few hours of playing I discovered how valuable the bags are, how annoying the gnoll pups are, and to stay the hell away from the fire beetles!!! :D It was still raining by that time, but it was already day time, so I could see further away, so while making my circles around the park, I always made sure not to live the sight of the main gates of the city. At some point I ventured too far along the wall and zoned into Qeynos Hills...
It was still raining, and my clip plane was all way down (as I later found out) so i could not see more than 10 feet away.
"This area maybe way too dangerous" I said to myself "better get couple more levels in the park before going here". So I promptly went back.
3. Fast forward to level 6 or so. Now running around Qeynos Hills, and confidently taking on these large wolves and skeletons, I for the first time found how SCARY the night time can become. back in North Qeynos, even at night, the gates were always very near, but in the hills i kept going in circles unable to return to where I have started. Dieing multiple times while running from 1 mob and into another, unable to find my corpse, and keep circling and circling, until somehow I made it all way to the Ruins, even though, I was sure I was somewhere in the area between the Tower and the Millers House.
The reason reason I run towards the ruins is cause there was LIGHT coming out of that spot, which draw me in like fire draws night bugs - to my death :D
I had a skeleton chasing me for a while at that time, and I saw some people sitting by the ruins, and i run to them for help. Suddenly, a huge brown skeleton poped out of the ground right in front of me, and proceeded hitting me like a truck.
Screaming and cursing, I started running around the ruins like mad, probably picking a few more skeletons in the process. The group that was there manged to get the dread corpse off me and even heal me. I should have backed away from the ruins at this point, but I had no idea that skeletons were statically spawning there, so I stood like an idiot in the middle of the ruins examining my new cool buff someone gave me. I can't recall the name right now, but It was a STR debuff that dread corpse proced on me. But I could not figure out why, if it was a buff, my STR got reduced??? While I was pondering on this question and asking in /ooc, another skeleton spawned right on top of me and finally finished me off...
By the time I respawned and run back, the sun was up, and I started looking around. Now for the first time I finally realized how far from the Millers house I made, when I suddenly saw ruins on top of the hill. pretty far away from where I thought I was. I claimed my corpse, and went back to the Millers House to sell.
From now on, I was only hunting around the house, making sure not to venture too far from it. As soon as the night would come, I would sit on the house stairs, regaining my health and listening to the most beautiful melody, that doesn't play in any other place in EQ, but here.
I was staring into the night, and planning how I would go out hunting again, as soon as sun comes back out...
This is probably my strongest nostalgic memory of my first days of EQ.

My first few hours went something like:
1. Lost for an hour in Neriak trying to get GM.
2. Lost for an hour in Neriak trying to get out of Neriak.
3. Given a nice new gossamer robe by a nice player.
4. Exping by log in Nektolus when kablam, PK'ed!
5. Trying to find body, finding my beautiful robe was stolen.
6. Just as it was dawning on me that people must be able to steal your gear, Kablam!! PK'ed.
Goto 4.
Lovely game, was addicted although eventually left server and went to Firiona Vie cus soloing is what I like and soloing on that server was virtually impossible :)

I had to take EQ back to the shop TWICE because the CD key wasn't valid...I think someone was trying to tell me something in hindsight given the years wasted on it and becoming a slacker ;)

Great recollection of the old days. I shared some of your experiences in the Qeynos area as that was where I made my first EQ character. A half-elf Paladin (whom I only played to about level 18 or so).
It certainly was a different world back then. There were no websites listing off quests, items, mobs, etc. There were no maps (save the useless ones which shipped in the original EQ box). Cries of "has anyone seen my corpse?" were the norm. In fact, I would always send a tell to any player when I would stumble upon their corpse (especially in West Karana).
I remember attacking the NPC's by accident because I hit the wrong key when typing. I also remember how scary it was moving beyond the safety of Qeynos to Qeynos Hills. I certainly remember meeting people sitting and fighting around the stone road marker in Qeynos Hills. We all grouped up and decided to head off towards West Karana, not knowing what to expect. It was nighttime in the game and raining with thunder booming. It's an experience which I will always cherish and which immediately comes to mind when I think of Everquest's early days.
We all explored the area, finding the guard towers along the roads, setting up camp at what we called "T2", the last guard tower on the hill near the Miller's farm. Spiders, lions, wolves, giant fire beetles, and the like fell before us. We marveled at a roaming Treant and wiped out to a brigand who decided to stop by.
I could go on for hours about these early experiences.

One of my coolest memories was watching the sun actually descend into the horizon in EQ time (was amazing for its time) and watching things get really dark and barely being able to see anything since I was human.
The music was epic, too.

Hahaha, casters were so overpowered in Baldur's Gate. With a fighter-mage, I solo'ed all of BGII. The Black Blade of Disaster just made things incredibly unfair for all parties involved.

When I start a Human character, I'm keeping the gamma down for this very reason. I loved being blind. I remember collecting fire beetle eyes and bear pelts in EC until the sun started to set; and when it finally did, I'd run over to Inn 1 to wait out the night and hope nothing jumped out at me from the darkness.
Ok, I think I really need to roll a Human now....

I just remember the game feeling so real to me. First day in EQ, I'm in Qeynos wandering around. When it started raining, I actually ran into a building to get out of the rain. Sad, but true.

Interesting that many people grumbled about the death penalties in EQ, but if it weren't for that fear of losing XP and corpse runs that came with it, would the excitement of adventuring a new area be as ingrained in our memories?
Adventuring new places was exciting and dangerous, and was never taken lightly. Seeing other players and their unique look or gear because it wasn't as easy as 1-2-3 poof new gear, it took time and a lot of luck to acquire many items in game.
My first eq experience came at the request of a friend, after playing diablo and similar games, he had stumbled on some friends playing EQ and he got hooked, then showed it to me one day, so I bought it.
When dicussing classes he suggested a Paladin because they are warrior and cleric built into one(of course now we know it wasn't that easy). So I started my human Paladin in Freeport. Stumbled around lost for a while trying to figure out who I was supposed to talk to and how to find them. Spent much time killing rats by the WFP gates. I think it took me like 2-3 hours to get to lvl 3. :)
FInally my buddy called and said he was loggin on. I told him I was in a place called West Freeport near an arch with some guards. He said he knew where I was and would be there shortly.
I continued fighting for about 20-30 mins, even stumbled on EC at one point and got my butt killed, so stayed near WFP.
As I'm fighting an orc I suddenly see spell effects around me, but I hadn't cast an heals on me. Finished my orc and ran off for th next one, and was like Whoa!!! I'm way faster, then I saw my buddy standing nearby, along with a pretty druid friend, who apparently had just cast SoW on me.
She threw a few more buffs on me and sent me a guild invite(although i had no idea what that was about at the time). She then said her goodbyes and my friend shadowed me while I spent the next few hours killing, as he was around a level 19 warrior at the time.
Took me quite some time to get levels up to group with those folks, but they would occasionally show up and assist me and whomever I was grouped with at the time.

So, continuing on to chapter 4...
4. Having more or less becoming familiar with Qeynos Hills, I grew increasingly upset about my warrior combat abilities. The mobs that I could kill easily no longer gave any good XP, and those that did would beat the living crap out of me, so I would have to sit and wait for health to recover what seem to be hours and hours....
At this time it occurred to me, that I need some healing. Thought of grouping with other players haven't visited me yet - I never played a social game before, so I thought grouping only relevant at high levels and during dragon raids.
So I have made a conclusion, to MAYBE try a different class. Thankfully I am not a person who gets upset by the need to start over, so went back to char select and decided to make a Paladin.
"It will be just like a warrior, but I could heal! Its ok that i won't get Dual Wield, but I could survive better".
So my Human Paladin was created, again in Qeynos and I proceed to repeat the process of last 3 days of playing from the scratch...
Fast Forward to my new paladin level 5, I made few new discoveries. First of all, I discovered BASH skill. Prior to this I had no idea how to get it. All the time I played my Warrior, I had no idea I could Kick from level 1, since the the Kick button wasn't on the starting interface, and I have missed on ton of DPS I could have done, which could have made my fights to end much faster.
Another, sad discovery was that - the fighting wasn't really getting any easier. I knew I had heal spell waiting for me at level 9, but it was A VERY LONG WAY TO GO. And I was once again stuck at level 6, sitting on my arse waiting for my hp to regenerate.
This is where I told myself "I need MORE healing power" And best healing class around is Cleric (according to the manual at least). And cleric is the toughest of the priests - he can wear Plate armor and can heal at the same time! the mobs won't be able to kill me at all!
With this in mind I have created my 3rd character - the Cleric. Starting with Minor heal at level 1 was COOL. One problem I run with the cleric, is the need to buy my spells, which cost TON OF MONEY. Something I didn't had with warrior and paladin so far. And there seemed to be A LOT of spells to buy. Some were useful, so looked useless to me. I could not for the life of me figure out how LULL spell suppose to work I was casting on a mob and attacking the same mob somehow hopping it will not attack me back, and of course that didn't work :D
Frustrated of money lost of a stupid spell that didn't work, I moved on, once again onto Qeynos Hills.
At level 4, I got Spook the Dead spell, which I found to be very cool. For a moment I thought I can now kill any undead very very easily.
Unfortunately, the undead had other plans.
The skeleton I tried it on, started to run away at a speed of light, and me chasing after it, while unharmed, could barely get any swings with staff at it. 18 seconds later, the fear run out, and skeleton proceeded to beat at me like it always happened before, and since I was continuously interrupted, i could not get another Spook or Nuke off, and was forced to melee it to death.
Another discovery I made was what BIND was.
I was selling in North Qeynos, when someone asked for a bind at the gates. I knew that warrior could Bind Wound, and I thought that person wanted someone to bandage him. I promptly replied that I was a cleric, and I could heal him instead. I rushed to the gates to deliver my services, where I discovered this player at full health. I was confused for a moment, till I somehow figured out that he wanted a re-spawn point BIND, which I read about in the manual, I haven't yet encountered this feature myself, as I have not yet needed to change for re-spawn point for any reason.
Slowly progressing up to level 6 (AGAIN), I came to a new realization.
It really didn't got much easier. Yes I did had heals now, and I could nuke, and fear, but casting in mid combat was nearly impossible (I had no knowledge of my channeling skills yet, and that they take a while to build up). And it took forever for my mana to recover, which while being slightly better that HP regeneration, still sucked.
Another thing that happened at this point of time, is when I did ding 6, and proudly announced to the zone "RAWR! level 6! Fear me infidel!", someone replied back with following "LOL, Fear Cleric!"
My day was ruined. If this what fellow player thought of my combat abilities, I could only imagine what mobs thought :(
Frustrated, upset, disappointed, I sat down with EQ manual once again, to maybe find a new class that tie well with my play mentality.
My Diablo and Baldurs Gates skill set was rather useless, and I knew I had to improvise to get anywhere...

thankfully I learned the lesson that walls apparently NOT all that solid with a brown bear! :D
Hahaha, casters were so overpowered in Baldur's Gate. With a fighter-mage, I solo'ed all of BGII. The Black Blade of Disaster just made things incredibly unfair for all parties involved."
Well, I came to BG from Diablo, and being able to fight in melee was the most important thing to me. And since BG wizards had paper hp, and only be able to cast like 2-3 spells a day, I never tried of leveling one beyond level 2, and promptly written them off as "Stupid and useless" :D
Hence when I started EQ, I approached it with same mentality :D

My first memory is picking up the game cause a buddy from tribes said it was awesome.
Having only played FPS before on a PC, I made a dwarf. Wandered around a bit, found a guard and thought pffft this guy is lame I'm gonna whoop his ass.
Hit attack, insta died, spawned naked outside with no idea of how to get back to the city. I thought it was the lamest game ever, I quit and went back to halflife and tribes.
It was months later that I gave it another fair shot, and got hooked for years to come lol.

So, continuing on to chapter 5...
5. During this in RL i was working with a young man called Kevin. At this point I was talking about EQ non stop for 2 weeks, and finally persuaded him to join up.
I was told Kevin to make a Qeynos based character while I decided to make a Shadow Knight.
Starting on my new SK and reading my guild note, I for the first time discovered that there were CATACOMBS under the city! Wow! I had no idea before this. I knew there were evil characters somewhere in the city, but I had no clue they were underground.
I followed the instruction in the note to "follow the path of bones" and zoned into catacombs.
I was truly impressed at all the Evil that has gathered under the city - the skeleton guards, and the Specters showed me how fearsome the Bloodsabers were.
I tried to explore catacombs a bit, but since my clip plane was still all way down, i could only see few steps ahead, and with tunnels going in what seemed to be all possible directions, I was fearing that I would get lost very very quickly, plus I expected the catacombs to be very high level area.
So I turned back, and returned to the city.
In the city, much to my surprised, all the good merchants I use to deal with, looked at me with unprovoked anger. "Isn't there is some kind of law, that prevents Shadow Knights crawling from under their rock?" - this is what I been told by my favorite merchant in Lion's Inn Tavern.
I scowled back at her, I thought to myself - "Just wait, few more levels, and all you fools will be on your knees before me!"
Zoning to North Qeynos, I found another surprise waiting for me - a peaceful npc I always passed on my way to the gates, suddenly rushed at me screaming "Die infidel!" and promptly beat me into bloody pulp. This is how I found out that paladin/clerics REALLY HATE Shadow Knight, and a value of a right mouse click (/con).
before this incident I only paid attention to the color of the /con message, since I naturally assumed that all the monsters are to be killed anyway, and all the npc are the good guys... At least from my former character's perspective :D
Now I had to be extra careful walking around my own city.
But it was ok. As went out to get my levels, I smiled at the sweet revenge I will have on all those who refused to talk to me today.
While i was gaining level, my friend Kevin finally logged in, and told me that he has made a Ranger. "Cool" I told him "Where are in You?"
The next 30 min we spend trying to figure out WHERE THE HECK HE WAS, so i can find him. Since I was more or less familiar with Qeynos by now, I asked him to read names of the shops he see around him. I was running around city trying to match them to the shops there, and found none. This is when I realized that he wasn't in the Qeynos at all - he was in Surefall Glide, since he was a ranger, and they start there!
I told him to find a tunnel leading to Q Hills, and run towards him. Unfortunately it was night and raining (as usual), so I got a bit off the road and ended up on the path leading to West Karana instead. By the time I found my way back again, the Kevin told me he has to get off, as his wife needed the phone.
Few days later, we finally got a chance to meet, and Kevin even played a bit, but eventually he decided EQ was too time consuming for him, so he canceled his account.
In the main time, my adventure as Shadow Knight continued. I found hunting to become increasingly difficult that it was before. I could no longer sell at the Miller's House, and had go all way back to catacombs to sell.
Another thing was, that a whole bunch of high level npc who hang around Qeynos Hills, started to attack me: Sandra, Baob, Holy and Cross - all were out for my blood.
During this time, another memorable event has take place: my encounter with a Rabbit Grizzly. Resting by the Millers House, I saw a HUGE bear standing up on the hill.
It conned RED and was named a Rabid Grizzly. English being second language to me, I read this as "Rabbit Grizzly". "Oh, this is so cool" i told my self "How truly deep this game is. This giant bear while fearsome, only eats Rabbits. hence, this is why its called a Rabbit Grizzly! Its completely harmless to humans. Look, i will show you". Continuing to talk to my imaginary audience, I promptly run up to the hill to take a screenshot with me fearlessly standing next to the big bear.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to me to /con the beast before approaching it! But no, it was a split second too late! :D
SMACK! Wait, What?! SMACK! Hey!!! SMACK! Ouch! SMACK!!!
Loading please wait...
This is how I learned the meaning of the word "rabid" :D
So, I finally made it to level 6(AGAIN!!!) and gave up. :(
The faction penalties were killing me, and despite the promise of all the cool spells I was suppose to get at lev 9, I hate the very idea of grinding XP of low end mobs just to get there.
This time I was MAJORLY upset. I really wanted to be good - if I just could find a class that I felt comfortable with.
I opened up all the online guides I could find (EQlore was a good site for class descriptions back then), and started reading through them, over and over, trying to find a class that could sustain itself, with healing and combat power, and won't rely too heavily on mana.

to be continue ;)

I'm interested Kika! EQ was like a playground for me at 14 years old.
It all started with my Cleric Ongor, a High Elf from Felwithe. It took me a good week to get level 5. I had never played any games like it before, I was an FPS player with no RPG background at all, but also I was 14. I eventually learned there were harder mobs in Greater Faydark and started hunting them. I'll have to think of some stories and come back and tell them. I had an amazing time and still love hanging around Faydark.

EQ then - camping King room in SolB and struggling to keep up with the spawns in that room only. EQ now - camping the "Royals" area and having twinked monks/tanks/rogues pull not only kobolds, but bats/bugs and kill stuff before you can get a DD spell off. High level enchanter buffing all with C2 and haste. Melee spam going by too quick to notice, and none of your buffs will stick to anyone since they all have better clicky items. It's a blast and not a whole lot different than the new MMO's out today.

Back before people knew how to farm for plat etc ws a great time for memories.
I remember heaing about these great Cutthoart Rings! And me and my bud saved up to buy a couple. We were so excited! +2 Dex holy moly!
And playing a DE and didnt mind lying to a human to get his plate pants. Apparently one of his people had been kidnapped to Neriak and he wanted info (RPing!). I did't know what he was talking about but I offered to give him some info for his pants. Muhahaha foolish human!
Oh no Griffin! Run into house to hide, Grif hits me through the walls WTF!
Hearing about Befallen for the first time! Everyone lets go find it! OH NO GIANTS RUN!
Zone into Befallen right into a massacre train.
Zone out of Befallen right into a Hill Giant.
Over all you cant go home again. Its all been discovered and seen and figured how best to make that XP and plat. But when it first started, it was purely about fun cause there was nothing else.

I don't have crystal clear memories of my very first EQ experiences. Nothing like a narrative, just moments.
- creating my first toon with the gamma turned all the way down, it is night and raining. I can't see ANYTHING. Took me FOREVER to figure out torches.....then gamma.
- joining an all evil RP guild because I was a troll. No other reason. Didn't even know wtf a RP guild was
- Thinking gate could be cast on other people and being stunned when it was I who was zoning
- running to the guards every 30 seconds because something ran away and I couldn't see it anymore
- not understanding the size of a troll. I sat down and went afk to eat dinner at the zone out of Guk. People couldn't get past me and died due to the frequent trains
- creating a dark elf SK and sitting at the docks in the oasis. Was just chatting with a random gnome. See a Sand Giant walk up and 1 hit kill the gnome. At the same time I hit hide. Never hit that button before but apparently it worked. Me and the SG just stared at each other for a few minutes before he wandered off
- reading actual novels while medding

I'm starting to think it's not nostalgia that makes EQ attractive. On a serious level.
It was the danger and the limitations placed on us.
Read here for some ideas:
http://www.gameskinny.com/9ltw7/mmos-are-not-games-where-mmo-s-go-wrong
And before someone starts spouting off about how I'm looking through rose-colored glasses (for the thousandth time /boggle... they never learn), I'm playing Wurm Online right now and I'll tell you without blinking that it's better than Everquest was. Tell me I'm looking through rose-colored glasses all you want, but the immersion I've got from Wurm Online BEATS the s*** out of Everquest and kills everything else I've played to this point with NO competition that I am aware of. The merciless mechanics and the limitations (no in-game map, for example) make it immersive. And the reason it swallows you up so much is because you have to pay attention.
You HAVE to pay attention to get by. You become absorbed into the game. You know how when you went outside at night as a kid and every sound was a monster? Well it's something like that.
The first few weeks I played Wurm were the most immersive I have ever experienced in any game. It was brutal and yet orgasmic in terms of the sense of reward I got from it. The moments were burnt into my mind. This became crystal clear to me while stand amidst a clear cut in the mountains. I was on hte perimeter of the clear cut looking at the stars and being wary of wandering creatures. I I could hear the wind. You guys really have to see Wurm to know what I mean, but it was at that moment when I realized that Wurm wasn't a game, it was a world. It didn't feel fake. It felt real. I mean, I know it's virtual, but it struck deep inside me.
Even now I am playing Wurm and the immersion is felt. Several months later. It's unbelievable. Just to give you an example... Earlier I was walking on the edge of the area where I live next to the water. It was winter so everything was mostly white, except the bay. Anyway, I know somebody built a road there because the shore is flat. It must have been a few years ago because I'm fairly sure there's no gravel or cobblestone there now. But anyway, tomorrow I plan on going back to my old house to find the Willow tree. It's a very special Willow tree. Willow trees give a bonus to bows, but it's more than that. Willow trees are rare. I came into Wurm wanting to be a ranger like I was in EQ. When I built my fist house, I had no idea about the Willow tree. When I found out that I had placed my house right next to the Willow tree without realizing it, it became special. Tomorrow I will go back and see if I can pick a sprout from it so I can go back to my new place and plant it. I will also searhc for a different Willow tree to cut down so I can make a bow which I will name Wind Saber.
EQ made me a ranger for life. Every game I play, the ranger is in the back of my mind.
Now, Wurm Online can get boring too if you're on a deed and too well protected and doing the same things every day. But Wurm has an element to it that's wild and free and untamed and DANGEROUS.
Consequences. We need those.
It's all about the need to be aware and the reward of doing it right.
It was the danger. It was the limitations. End of story. My opinion, ofc.
