View Full Version : Treants kicking my butt

I just hit 29 and decided to give the treants a try. I seem to kill the lower level ones np but every 3 kills i get a really hard one where i will have 75 health and the mob about 10-15 and he starts healing himself next thing i know im getting wrecked by the dot and his knockback nuke.

I fully buff myself including haste, magic and fire resist, i have a poison wind censor (thanks franswa going away party). i pull with slow, send a pet in (having charmed animal helps a bit) put my envenomed breath on and go to work. If i miss 1 slam it seems to go downhill. I was trying to nuke him when he was at low health but 2 times i got the message my spell landed yet no damage was dealth not sure if this is a bug or not because it worked on some of them.

Anyway any advice would help, i wanted to farm these guys for a bit but not sure if i suck or i should find something else for a couple of levels.

PS if any clerics near south karana i could use a rez, i can donate.

This is one of the things I can't stand about EQ.

A consider system that isn't consistent. i.e. undercon mobs.

Caster mobs on p1999 cast level appropriate spells.. on live they would cast lower level spells.

Well im not one to quit im back at em, my nukes gave me a message like before and actually landed this time, seems hte trick is to chain cast nuke as soon as he is low health and starts healing himself, hope this strat keeps up.

Is there already a bug thread about this?

We could like... totally post in it with some nerd rage and give it renewed visibility?

In my opinion, treants are too hard for the exp you get (unless you're fear-kiting or something that mostly prevents them from casting). And their loot isn't especially great either.

At your level, I'd recommend you try High Keep guards or the Millers/guards camp in Qeynos Hills.

Yeah, casters are almost always more trouble than they are worth, ESPECIALLY as a shaman. Your solo strength lies in medding while a rooted mob dies to your dots (or in tanking+meleeing a slowed NPC). But caster NPCs don't let you do that.

I mean, I guess you might be able to make it work with some fancy footwork. Root at max range, backup a step quick to outrange the treant's spell, step forward to stick a dot, repeat, etc. But you'll almost certainly still get spells sticking on you, and it is very not cool to get snared or rooted.

Hehe i have a system that works for me now, and im fine here because i afk study while i med/regen.

I give myself haste, max range cast slow start running as soon as it lands, this interupts his casting, being casting my dot, before he hits me he is slowed and dot'd, then i melee him down and start nuking at 30%. Ill stay here for a level or 2 just cause i got so much studying coming up and each kill is exiting cause of the risk factor, def gonna find a new spot in a few levels though.

Sounds like you're wasting a lot of duration on the slow by casting it first. Does it wear off before the end of the fight?

Is that really true, Tuffpuppy? I remember having trouble with caster mobs on live, too. Like, a LOT of trouble.

Not once also if I root means instead of running they sit and heal = why I died first time. It's working so going to work with it for now. Other problem with rooting is he then casts his dot/blind/knock back nuke. I'd rather melee him and him melee me ether than deal with extra spell damage. If I find some crazy buffs I'll try root rot

I hunted here with my shaman from the time the treants were dark blue until around 34 or so.

Just spam frost nuke until they die, easiest method.

They are good loot also and you can vendor at centaurs.

My monk could actually handle caster mobs - even healers - on live.

Here? Much harder. They just seem to be a lot more relentless in terms of healing. They were stupid on live - they'd only start casting heals at very low health (like 5% or so off running hp). Here, they start at like 35-30%. And on live, they wouldn't heal over and over and over - maybe once or twice. Then they'd give up and just fight you or keep dotting/nuking.

Live Shaman mobs didn't blind either - ever. I know that, I just haven't taken the time to prove it.

Sorry that's wrong. Definitely remember my entire screen going pitch black against Orc Shaman and being scared as shit back then.

I have also been blinded by shaman on live. By the troll shaman that roams in Toxx.

+1

I remember at the Orc camps in Gfay being blinded as a noob and freaking out thinking my game was broken. Circa 99

This really is classic EQ, everyone thinks they have the answer.

Unless someone from the p99 can confirm, this back and forth is kinda... pointless.

I just don't remember froggy or kobold shaman ever casting it even though I soloed Lguk/SolB for most of my 50s. Maybe some shaman mobs did; but the 30+ ones I fought didn't.
