I'm really curious to know what Rogean and Nilbog's were. You two should reply to this!
Anyway, what was your first online gaming experience?
Doesnt matter if it was a one time, one minute thing, id really like to know from
everyone.
My first experience that lasted up until they finally shut the game down in March
was a game called Infantry (Sony), which was developed by the folks who made Sub Space.
i put years into my RPG character on one of the zones only for it to be erased. The game died due to them making it pay 2 play back in the day, and shitty zone rotations. Instead of putting up all the zones at once, they would put up the crappy ones no one would play so after a while i figured most of the loyal players of Infantry stopped checking the zone list.
Sadly there is no other game out there like infantry. thats what makes me sad, this game was a pinnacle in its day. my second online experience that became a regular thing was Counter-strike 1.6. That game is dying too if im correct.

I think it was Age of Empires, the first one. Used to play that game all the time with my buddies after school. Then there was Dune 2000, Red Alert, Everquest, one of the Rainbow Six games, and Counter Strike.
However, AoE dominated all of them at first until I really got into EQ. I played AoE til 2, 3 in the morning and then had to get up at 530 or 6 for highschool the next day. Loved that game.

X-Wing vs Tie Fighter - Starwars before it was cool (again). Then C&C, C&C Red Alert, Age of Empires II, and finally Everquest just before the dawn of broadband. Homeworld & Homeworld II in there somewhere, too.

The first game I played online was the original Doom with a 2400 baud modem. It seemed pretty amazing though I only played the one time online. Warcraft 1 got me started on regular online play. My first mmorpg was a MUD by the name of Gemstone 3 in the mid 90's. It was an even slower grind than Everquest but a hell of a lot of fun.

I have friends who played eq live with me back in Kunark who didn't know there was a duke nukem prior to the 3d one :(
I can still hear the noises in my head from grabbing those delicious little popcans and whatnot for $$$$points.

I played Infantry on and off from 1999-2008. I had no idea that it was shut down. They ruined it with the P2P implementation. Before that, there were thousands of people playing. It was so much fun...if they could revive it and repopulate it, then I would play again.
The first online game I remember playing is Diablo. I was more into Starcraft and Unreal when they came out soon afterward, though.

A flash WW2 game with an isometric view you played in a browser, then Action Half-Life, Diablo II, Starcraft, etc. Then EQ and so forth. Probably a lot of small titles I can't remember.

Techincally my first would be Dragon Gate. MMO that precedes Ultima Online, and you paid per minute (since it precedes subscriptions as well).
It took me 22 minutes (and $22) to make my first character. I was 15 with no income, so my parents said once was enough and I never played again.
After that, I focused on cheaper endeavours with Warcraft II, Rebellion, and Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (yay email turn-by-turn play!).

C'mon, don't knock Legend of the Red Dragon and Food Fight on BBSs. That's how I made it through middle school computer class... that and creating OS shells that had naughty words built into the error messages.

LotRD! Don't call me Farmboy!
That was a great game for it's time. The preview of online fantasy games:
Kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to get the gold to buy the sword to kill the monster to all grinding and no play makes jack a dull boy all grinding and no play makes jack a dull boy...

Overhead shooter.. can't tell you much more that was like 13? years ago.. wow.
I wish I could play again to see how accurate my memory is, any chance it still exists in any form?
Lagaidh
04-30-2012, 09:43 AM
I don't remember if I posted in here yet or not, so here goes:
July 3rd, 1999 I created Lagaidh the dwarven paladin. I allotted 11 extra points to CHA because the original description text said that was useful to a paladin. I played that character for 310 days as my main from the original game all the way through a smidge of the SoD expansion. I really didn't play much in 2005 and it was the last year I attended a raid with my guild, Sequel of Maelin Starpyre.
Lagaidh was born on the Rathe and stayed there until Maelin opened. I had friends transfer over and they stayed on my butt until I did the same.
When Lanys TVill opened, a few buddies of mine and I all recreated our toons there. We were going to have me skill up as a smith while they all stayed in rags and farmed whatever they could to pump money into the venture so that we could all be the first offering banded. It was working until a few just started keeping what they earned and outfitting. That was fine. It was their time and money. Me and my best hunting buddy returned to our mains on the Rathe.
Lagaidh Smif the dwarven paladin and Toraque Hirsuane the half-elf ranger... we'd attempt crap whole groups wouldn't try. We died. A lot. I think I got my first rez for XP when I was over L50.
I remember that first weekend. I was instantly hooked. I played all weekend and made it to L6. I remember asking Toraque at work on Monday if that was good or not.
I remember my first group in Butcherblock. I kept running around in that early windowed mode of EQ where the big grey UI surrounded a smaller window. I remember a groupmate begging me to use Lay Hands! I did. It had no effect on the goblin that was my target.
I remember my first trip out of Butcherblock. I followed closely behind someone with a lantern to get to Kelethin. I spent a lot of time farming rusty weapons and cloth armor from crushbone orcs. I saved up and bought bronze armor. I was L10 and didn't know what the person meant who told me I was an obvious twink. I thought he was calling me gay, heh.
I remember saving and getting a PGT. I hunted with it in Oasis and NRO and when it procced I always thought a wizard was trying to steal the group's kill. I never did see that wizard...
EverQuest, nearly thirteen years ago, was my first online gaming experience. I've played some WoW and some EQ2, but they are pale pretenders. I've started forum threads all over asking folks if EQ was just that good, or does that first MMO have the grip on the player's heart that no other game can match?
I've never truly figured out the answer... EQ is my favorite to this day. I'm sure this is an opinion shared by most p99ers. Otherwise, why would they even be here?

I remember watching a friend play Gemstone, which is kind of funny because it was all text =P
I think my first online game I played somewhat seriously was Myth the Fallen Lords. An awesome RTS created by Bungie years before they created Halo.

The Shadow of Yserbius, a game by Sierra which was probably one of the first graphical muds, it predated the internet. The game was released in 1992 and was available on floppy, you played it over dialup and had to call into the server. I still have the disk somewhere.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow_of_Yserbius
In late 2007, the ImagiNation Revival Project succeeded in resurrecting the long-dormant ImagiNation Network by using the original client software coupled with DOSBox. The Shadow of Yserbius is now once again available for online play with all features, graphics, sounds, and such fully intact and functional. Macros are fully supported and compatibility with old character and map files is enabled for TSN/INN versions 2.4 and higher.

As a kid I dabbled in some mud that I cannot remember the name of and I never interacted with anybody. So I don't think that counts.
Next was Diablo I which I mostly played solo but did play with my brother a few times. But I don't really think it counts.
That leaves...
