View Full Version : Are you using EQEmuLauncher?

I'm trying to find out how many people are actually using the launcher, since the stats are most likely not trustworthy due to too many DDoS attacks.

If you like to keep using the launcher, vote yes. If there aren't enough votes, i might aswell shut it down.

I'm not sure what kind of infrastructure you have behind it, but I'd be happy to host it if you end up wanting to shut it down. I find it very useful and would like to see it continue being available.

thanks for this offer.. if there are enough yes votes, i will not shut it down.. if only a handfull of people is using it, i dont see a reason to keep it up.

I use it for patching sometimes. Though not always. Mostly because it doesn't allow customization (for example force patches everything, I mess with globalload a lot. I then have to go back and change it, patching by hand lets me simply not patch that file.)

There's also display issues for me. A lot of GeorgeS' tools have the same issue. Presumably because of the resolution of my PC. Or maybe even because I run Windows 7 64-bit.

Handles fine for me otherwise :)

@Rumzuck: If anyone other than myself wants to use it, that's reason enough for me to want to host it. I'm happy to do so, it will cost me nothing, and I have the time and resources to do it. I would just need your cooperation in moving things around and getting it set up elsewhere.

@Danyelle: That problem happens when your DPI scaling in Windows 7 is turned up higher than 100%. At some resolutions and monitor sizes, Win7 will automatically crank that up for you. You can turn it down by going to the Screen Resolution adjustment window and clicking "Make text and other items larger or smaller," then set it to 100%.

dont use it cause when following the p99 instructions that didnt come into play i guess. just did the installs/files and started up from the .exe
also like messing with files by hand easier i guess

Oh THAT's what caused it. Makes sense. I changed that on purpose so I'll live with it lol. My resolution/monitor size is way too big to change the size back to 100% and not have to press my face against the screen to read lol

its not about the costs, its about beeing "associated" with P99 and beeing DDoSed on a weekly basis, its plain annoying

What do you mean being "associated" with P99? I saw that mentioned in another thread, but not quite sure what people are referring to.

And I can take steps to handle the DDoSing, there are ways to fix such things.

it means that whatever retard is DDoSing P99 is lashing out on the launcher also ... since it always happens simultanously ...

if you enjoy having a million connections per second on your infrastructure ... then have fun handling it lol ... i sure as hell wont spent hundrets of euros or dollars or anything to get the necessary equipment to handle attacks like that for something we offer for free ...

i mean you can see how well rogeans $500 a month anti DDoS solution works out ...

Ah, I see.

Well, like I said, there are ways around it and tools that can be used to handle such things, and I'm happy to take it on. It doesn't cost hundreds of dollars/euros to fix. I enjoy the service and I know I'm not the only one, so to me there is value in maintaining it.

It may not be "worth" it for some, but dealing with netsec is my job. I have no problem taking on the responsibility.

I use it on patch days to update, but most days I just use the eqgame.exe shortcut.

there is not much i can do besides banning.. so a ddos attack is always successfully within the first minutes, until all the zombies are banned :)

I used to use it. I don't use it anymore. It was a cool patcher for playing on different servers, but I stick to P99 now.

Not a lot of people typically read these forums, may want to request this into being made a sticky.

Up until today I wasn't aware there was a manual alternative to using the launcher. I just used eqgame.exe shortcut to log in since the launcher is currently not working, but how do you manually patch without the launcher? Specifically for switching servers, say, from p99 to EZ (hey, I visit occasionally when the blue server isn't accepting new connection, sue me :p )

I find the launcher convenient cause I'm old and not as tech savvy as I used to be, but if there's an alternative and it's a hassle to keep hosted, I don't see it as necessary.

What he said.

You just download the files, unzip them, and replace them in your folder. We all did that for years and months ago before the EQEmuLauncher.

But I used to save my old files just in case.

>Do i need to do this if i want to dick around on other servers?
No. Not necessarily. The rule of thumb on EQEmu (though no one ever seems to think to do it...) is make back ups of any files you change. Keep them in a folder named after the server that uses them. Compress them in a zip or rar if you need/want to. This makes it easy to switch back and forth. Even the EQEmu Launcher will not change custom files back to stock versions if you change servers. If you want to take the easier route, then more than one install is the way to go, though. I, personally, have 4 different versions of EQ installed.

1. Modified Titanium = P99
2. Steam install of Underfoot = Every other EQEmu server (I treat this client like my child. Tons of file backups. Unlike Titanium since that client's only purpose is P99 for me anyway)
3. EQMac client = EQMac obviously
4. Live client = Live Test server

>My past experience has been, patch files for xxx server, mess around, come back to p99, my shit is all jacked up, reinstall.
That's because not all files, stock or custom, are compatible with all servers. Spell files and Global Loads are the most commonly changed. But there are some servers that change a lot more. P99 has several .dll changes. The Hidden Forest has several "custom" weapon files and spell graphics (In reality it's recompiled weapon and spell graphics from up through Veil of Alaris tossed into one .eqg but shhhhhh don't let anyone know the secret!!)

>My second question would be, how the hell do you do it on win7. I know i had 2 separate installs on an older machine.
1. Install Titanium.
2. Copy the ENTIRE Titanium folder to your C:\ Drive named something like "Titanium1"
3. Uninstall Titanium through the control panel (This removes all install information and files, but since you made a complete copy of the necessary directory to your C:\ Drive it's still there to use. Allowing a new install.)
4. Either make a second copy of that same folder if it hasn't already been modified. If it has been modified, simply reinstall Titanium. Preferably to the C:\ Drive again instead of Program Files. Much easier to mess with this way.

I personally don't use it because I don't find the manual patching process to be difficult, and I'm a bit of a control freak. If I put files where they go (and it's usually just 4 files) I get more peace of mind... Of course, that may mean I'm not a good data point as to why one does not use the patcher, but I thought I'd answer your post.

I also use this and would be sad if it was to go away. Norova I can help with supporting this if that time ever comes.
