The other post they keep commenting on is from 12:30am cst lol why if the server is down (again) @ 9am cst would they comment saying it is down on a post that was for the 12:30 crash.

What about a login server that reboots itself once an hour? Idk. This just seems really persistent, like almost daily persistent lately.

..hire some Euro based devs... they'll catch and fix this sooner than we will since most of us are still asleep at the hours it often gets broken.

Can anyone explain to me what the problem even is? Like what is physically happening and why do we seem to deal with it more here.

would this actually work? seems like a fairly elegant solution if so. might be annoying if the server takes 5+ minutes to reboot though.

I have no idea hehe, just seems like something lazy I'd do if I had a server with these kinda problems but I have absolute zero experience in these areas so probably is an extremely sloppy/non-applicable suggestion. I just wanna know whats happening is all really.

It's the login server, not the server itself. Every time you zone it tries to re-verify your credentials; Obviously failing. The remaining people are either AFK or smart enough to stay where they are and keep grinding.

No. If it was the login server, every other server would have this issue. They don't. It's this server.

Project 1999 != Everquest Emulator.

If it was the login server you couldn't log on to the EQ Emu to see any servers,

It's a problem specifically with P99.

As it got disconnected from the login server, lol.
Login Server is 100% up and running. P99 Blue is not.

The problem is with the world server that handles logins to the server and zones. If the problem exists on both servers we probably only see it on blue because it is likely an incremental problem caused by a user action like zoning, which occurs much more on blue. It could be some unreleased resources on an action, perhaps even particular to zoning in Kunark.

You...don't understand how this works so let me explain.

The world server connects to the login server right? World server, among many things, handles moving from one zone to another. Every single zone that is "up" has it's own individual zone server that communicates with the world server as well as any clients actively connected to that zone. When that message appears it means that the world server has lost it's connection with the login server. NOT that the login server has gone down. When the login server goes down all servers cease communication, all players are booted, and the world server goes into an infinitely looping attempt to reestablish connection, which obviously fails until the login server is brought back up. When the world server drops, however, all people that are still with a single zone may continue playing, as they are still being handled by their individual zone server. However if they were to attempt to zone, log in/out, go linkdead, die, or anything of that nature, the world server is no longer there to handle the transition between zone servers and the player is booted from the game.

Make sense?

Danyelle
08-04-2012, 10:37 AM
I should also probably mention this as I think this is where you're getting confused. The world server is specific to that individual server. P99 has it's own world server, P99 Red has it's own world server, PEQ has it's own world server, EZ has it's own world server, THF has it's own world server, and EVERY single zone on each server has their own individual zone servers. However EVERY server shares the same login server. If the world server drops it only affects the server that world server belonged to. If the login server drops, EQEmu doesn't work....period. People can't log in, people can play, servers can't connect. Even the EQEmu forums go down, as they are hosted on the same box. Or at least were once upon a time, I'm unsure if they still are.

that or have a series of scripts setup to query the worldserver and either A:Reset the server if it detects issues or B:Notify someone (or everyone with permission to reset the server) if it detects an issue

We can't just have a euro GM because we need someone on a certain time schedule...schedules change! I certainly don't want them to scrape the barrel if there are no suitable GM apps in a certain timezone

And it would be easy to spot on the logs when someone was doing it for reasons other than a legit server reset.

Normally I would agree, but some of us only have select hours of play time, and when the server continually goes down during those select hours, it makes it very difficult to enjoy.

What makes it worse is that the rate this is happening is only increasing.

Your personal time has nothing to do with a free product. It's free. Thus you cannot complain. IF you were paying monthly and there were issues, than you would have every right to complain.

Pretty sure 90% of the player base has lives. I'm included. But i'm not so ignorant to believe that more special or my time at a specific time is more special than anyone elses.

It's a free product and I'll enjoy it when I am able and if its working, perfect, if not, I have no right to complain as I'm not paying any of the bills to run the server, nor paying any of the people who contribute to the server.

Just because something is free doesn't mean you cannot complain. You can still express concern over it not working properly, just don't be an ass about it. You may not be entitled to hold someone responsible for the service not working, but you sure as heck have the right to complain a little.

Swinger
08-04-2012, 05:29 PM
Is the issue money? How much does a reliable server cost monthly? Yearly? I don't know about everyone else.. but this is my "alone-time hobby". If I'm not working or fishing, I'm everquesting. I sure wouldn't mind chipping in for a more reliable server if it meant less glitches.

mwatt
08-04-2012, 05:29 PM
Yes it's free so no right to complain. The freeness is probably contributing to the issue because we may be running on lesser equipment than is optimal and/or we may be using a bargain ISP or on some sort of limited usage deal. Or it could be DOS attacks. Or it could be something else entirely.

Granted it is happening more lately than I can recall in my 2 or so years of play here. I have to believe however that Nil and Rog are aware of the problem. Because they are who they are I am also sure that whatever steps can be taken are either being taken now or will be soon.

Food at a soup kitchen is free.
If it's unnecessarily hot and scolds a homeless man, should he just suck it up and deal with it?
What if it burns more than one person and it happens every couple of days when they serve soup in particular?
Should they all just deal with it because it's free?

What if the food isn't quite hygienic and they get sick or at least bad stomach pains.
Should they all just deal with it because it's free?

People who defend this 'free' argument are just asses with nothing better to do.

It's safe to say that other servers run on less hardware with less support than P99 and yet they don't have this issue.
And why on Earth don't any of the guides, GMs or admins pop up a broadcast as soon as they see the error (or get messaged) as to let people know not to zone or log out?

People who defend this 'free' argument are just asses with nothing better to do.

It's safe to say that other servers run on less hardware with less support than P99 and yet they don't have this issue.

if some lazy ass bum doesnt like the food at a soup kitchen he can go dig in the garbage, bad argument there mate.

/p = this session: 11hrs 45min 30sec

@5:30pmEST

server has not been down in at least near 12 hrs because i wouldnt still be in game at this moment. Login Server not letting you connect does not always mean P99 is down.

You may not have experienced some of the things that sometimes goes hand in hand with logon server problems - which is "world server" problems (maybe that is the same thing? I dunno). For the past few weeks, it is not uncommon to zone and crash and not be able to log back in or even to simply go LD and not be able to get back in because login server is down. Lately, I have seen a lot of global messages related to world server disconnecting and reconnecting. This often presages a soon to come LD.

Whatever floats your boat, if complaining helps you sleep at night go for it. The effect it will have will be negligible though.

You'd have just as much luck complaining that its raining outside and cursing mother nature.

Why do you care again?

Grats on having a life broski, *virtual high five*

And yeah you're an american for sure. Grats on that to. Complain until your hearts content. You might get some type of bonus government check in the mail for quality complaining.

Complaining and being pissed aren't the same broski... Also, I wasn't aware you could get checks from the government for complaining, you must be an expert.

Doing nothing doesn't require action, complaining does...

Anyway... I'm gonna get a glass of scotch, and try to log in..

The way it seems to be happening more frequently with the recent resurgence in population makes me favor your theory. It sure smells like a memory leak of some sort... lose a little on some repeated action and after a while some piece of software seizes.
