The fact that there's no Euro time zone GM or players with authority to reset the server is something they should be talking to us about - because until they do fix it, at least having someone around during 'waking hours' means that people don't have to suffer the increased amount of downtime.

Usually red people whine about how they don't like blue because they want to be able to kill someone who is camping something and then claim that camp for themselves.

I was going to suggest that exact thing, easy enough to get a program to watch for that pop up and at least we wouldn't be waiting 6 hours plus for the server to come back. Good short term workaround.

Some folks have tossed out band-aid solution ideas and I might as well add to the list while I wait:

I've had an issue where a program would "hard-crash" and pull up th e"this program has stopped responding" window, which is actually some form of the "Doctor Watson" crash handling program.

When that happened, I needed to clear the "this program has stopped responding" window automatically, so I just set up a scheduled task to run "KILL DWWIN.EXE" EVERY minute (or whatever the process was that opened when I got this unwanted pop-up). This way it would completely CLOSE out of the crashed program once the debugger popped up, which would then allow the other scheduled task that tries to run the batch file every minute (as long as that task wasn't already currently running, an option in task scheduler).

Net result is: whenever a crash happens, it closes out of the program automatically, and then the automated scheduled task re-opens my batch file that launches the program.

In that order should be their priority until it's sorted.
BUT RE: the European thing, sometimes I wonder if that would really make a difference as it's noon now and yet it's still not fixed. Surely not all GMs with reset access are still asleep, already gone out or died last night.

that raises a valid point. I am not worried about bandwidth usage so why do I log out? I am going to find a safe spot and just go AFK in the future I think, whenever possible.

back in the day it was bard, druid, and necro. I'd imagine its the same here. The trick with bards and necromancers is to get pumice stones to dispell dots and buffs. When you get close to 'em you can smash them. The hard part is getting close though.

Oddly enough could it be a driver update, failing hardware, a kernal patch? The code for the server might be solid but some wierd hardware issue could be causing the drivers to foul up and in that case no correct code will work.

IMO all this login server crashing is a lead up to a large GM event. The "lore" is some big baddie has been messing with the strands of reality in Norrath, causing people to suddenly disappear upon entering a new area, or for sleeping warriors to be unable to wake up!

THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE WORK OF HACKANNON! We defeated him once before, but we must band together as comrades in arms in order to defeat the supersteroid-trakanon that has come back to destroy the server once more.

You can get malloc ( or new and delete ) wrappers too that will let you do allocation logs and so forth.

As a sysadmin, that was my first guess. I believe these are physical servers and not virtual, and it's very possible a bad stick of RAM is causing the issue. It would definitely explain its sudden appearance and intermittent behavior.

Ram is the cheapest solution to test too. But I wouldn't be surprised if they've already tried switching out the sticks and it didn't help.

I'm a sysadmin for a fleet of virtualized linux boxes, but I'm next to useless on windows machines. If you've updated/reverted code a bunch though, it probably isn't in the code. I'd bet it's probably either hardware (ram, perhaps something to do with the BUS on the motherboard) or a system package that got updated to a buggy version. Or a version that isn't compatible with the code you already have written.

Atleast those are the typical problems I run into when it isn't the devs fault. A custom built C++ server tho is a far cry from what i have to deal with. Props to you guys for dealing with it.
