Is it too much to ask that you be reasonable about the price, though?
150k, 175k, 200k... is that too much to ask for the single most powerful item in EQ history between epics and PoP release? I paid 59k more than a friend had paid less than a week earlier, but I'm not complaining. AoN still costs quite a bit more, and does essentially nothing.

150k is acceptable. 200k is unreasonable. Nobody here gives a shit about an AoN, your 59k or your lack of complaining.

A price of 200k is as arbitrary as a price of 150k. The last earth staff sold for 175k. For one to say that one price is unreasonable over another price is purely opinion and irrelevant. People will pay what they pay. The market speaks for itself and there is no use getting all bent out of shape about it.
Spitty
10-10-2012, 08:10 PM
You act like you have this wonderful fountain of knowledge that isn't completely obvious.
150k versus 200k is arbitrary, or better yet, irrelevant to a guild banker such as yourself. For a couple of guys who play this game a few times a week, that 50k gap is much bigger than you would think.
You could be a decent sort and just take the 150k. But, you're not.
Nastinate

staffs have sold 3-4 times the last 6 months for 100-120k and the last one for 175k.. Items prices on the server have dropped drastically during this same time period. My offer stands at 150k firm meeting you halfway and in my opinion paying 50% more than its worth. I really cant justify paying more than this and i will not justify a 200k price by purchasing.

If you've been offering 50% more than what you think the staff is worth for almost 2 months, what does that tell you of what your offer is compared to what the actual market value of the staff is?
I've hired the Perun Map Company to put together a diagram that is professionally done and easy to understand.

Market value of the staff?
There is no market. You need 3+ parties to have a market, otherwise it's just two people trading (or in this case not trading).
Not to mention the item clearly has no liquidity at the price you're trying to charge.

His 'market' apparently includes some person that purchased at 175k, though whether or not that actually happened is debatable.

300k minimum imo - mage epic makes us relevant again.
This is really not the place for this. I'm no fan of Eccezan, I really don't know him. I've done business with him and thought he was reasonable, straightforward and fair. Eccezan on RnF =/= Eccezan the businessman.
TMO has a monopoly. They are selling the MQs, it's just a fact. Most people aren't as vocal or public as Nastinate about their purchases; I certainly wasn't. TMO keeps selling roughly as fast as they accumulate, so they bump up the price. If nobody buys one for a while and they've got 3 rotting in the bank, supply would be outpacing demand and you could maybe expect them to bump the price down.
And none of this changes that in terms of endgame items, you will probably never find a better value than 200k for the single most powerful, irreplaceable item from the current era until PoP. That's like 2 years of the live timeline, which probably equates to eternity on P99.
Spitty
10-11-2012, 05:55 PM
This didn't get 'vocal' or 'public' until the last few pages, when the attitude of RnF (see the mastery of bitmap artwork displayed above) found its way onto this thread.
You may have an overdeveloped sense of whether or not this place is appropriate for a certain kind of discussion - but perhaps read the whole thread, or at least skim it a bit, before doling out advice.
When it has been established that earth staves on this server have sold for 100k prior to Eccezan's price-fixing maneuvers, and his price is increasing when every other item or MQ still dropping on p99 has fallen drastically in value, I fail to see this whole exercise as nothing more than a dick move.
Nastinate
10-11-2012, 10:36 PM
Really wanted to keep things private, Ive stated in PM's twice the last 3 weeks that my offer is 150k firm and then Eccezan advertises in my thread a week later. Honestly he can set whatever price he wants, but if hes gonna post here after we've done discussed the matter, i have to throw my 2 cents in. This isnt personal, im not trying to start a pissing contest, really dont care about tmo or the server politics one way or the other. Was only trying to convey that 150k firm means stop asking me for 200k, i had made my offer and moved on.
baramur
10-12-2012, 04:28 AM
Yes the Mage epic is powerful, yes the earth staff is rare, yes tmo almost has a monopoly on it, yes maybe 200k is a good price, and No i would never pay it personally.
I agree that at the current momment 200k may actually be a fair price, but for me its just not worth it, and the reason being i can wait. Thats right i can wait. Hate is revamped in velious era and staff goes from 1 to 2 a month to 2 or more a week. An items value is only that which someone will pay for it. I wish Ecc good luck in selling it, and with N good luck in finding one for a 150k, for me i have decided i will wait on velious and pay 75k max. If you cant find it hell start a twink until velious if not farm away and gluck.

On the other hand, a major TMO representative - their 'banker', in fact - has displayed a purity level of douchebaggery unseen outside of a laboratory.

I disagree with your commentary. TMO always prices items to meet demand and given that we currently have zero available, it seems that we are doing a fine job at that.
Now if you spent your time saving the amount of money necessary to purchase the item you need at the market price, this post wouldn't be two months old. I don't see where douchbaggery comes into play with letting market forces work themselves out.

Markets don't function efficiently in the presence of a monopoly Eccezan. You can charge whatever you want for your stuff, just don't call it the market price.
quido
11-12-2012, 01:38 AM
It's not really a monopoly though in the traditional sense. If other people were getting these staffs it would mean less for sale and probably a higher price. There is only a limited amount of earth staffs. I personally think this should sell for 300k given the rarity and the quality of the epic.
Splorf22
11-12-2012, 01:44 AM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but TMO is the only one selling them, yes? That seems like a textbook monopoly to me.
But hey i just like trolling Spitulski's thread.

This server has documented history of these items selling for 100k long before TMO's mages were equipped and the excess became available to the open market.
Not only did you open with a markedly higher price (which was more than fairly counter-offered), you've increased the price multiple times and so poignantly updated us via public post in this thread.
I'm sure that having guildmates express their feelings about the item price gives you more moral levity than you deserve. It happens, and thankfully I spend enough time around people of quality and of decent caliber to identify a shitty human being when I interact with one.
You are right, though - I could be ingame saving my pennies for an item you are selling. An item that has no benefit to my character, a shaman. An item I only began seeking out because a friend was having trouble sourcing a few months ago.
And you act as if I'm not trying to deal decently with you while you simultaneously act like these items are getting rarer.

Time to learn you spitty:
Taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand
The four basic laws of supply and demand are:[1]
If demand increases and supply remains unchanged, a shortage altogether, thus leads to a higher equilibrium price.
If demand decreases and supply remains unchanged, a surplus altogether, thus leads to a lower equilibrium price.
If demand remains unchanged and supply increases, a surplus altogether, thus leads to a lower equilibrium price.

Eccezan's Wikipidia quote failed to include the preceding and explanatory paragraph.
I want to add some information to make the issue slightly clearer (good luck if you know nothing about economics).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supply_and_demand#Criticisms
The rest of the quote.
"Supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market. It concludes that in a competitive market, the unit price for a particular good will vary until it settles at a point where the quantity demanded by consumers (at current price) will equal the quantity supplied by producers (at current price), resulting in an economic equilibrium of price and quantity."
Competitive Markets:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_competition
In economic theory, perfect competition describes markets such that no participants are large enough to have the market power to set the price of a homogeneous product. Because the conditions for perfect competition are strict, there are few if any perfectly competitive markets. Still, buyers and sellers in some auction-type markets, say for commodities or some financial assets, may approximate the concept.

Monopoly in fact, hidden behind wall of text with business/finance jibberish.
I disagree with this. Monopoly would mean that TMO is the only guild that kills or has ever killed Innoruuk. This is completely untrue. In fact as recently as last week, Inny was killed by Taken. Whether he dropped earth staff or not, I dont know.
This also doesn't mention all of the earth staffs that have ever dropped pre-kunark that are on inactive NON TMO characters. Given these variables, we can approximate the concept of a competitive market.
