Anyone been keeping up on this? I just scoped the site out.. yikes. 3/4 of the links are broken and send to dead pages. Half the news updates are some bored Dev talking about when he used to play Eq1, and the concept art of the zones is quite WoW-like on a conceptual level.
Sigh.

" EQ Next is still being built within a black box. The *earliest* we are currently considering that we *might* reveal info is late this year. We’re being very particular about what needs to be in the game before revealing it to folks, so until that stuff is ready, we won’t be showing anything. (Screens you saw from a couple years ago are completely obsolete now and are not pertinent to the current game at all.)
There is no reason for EQ or EQII to ever fade away. EQN is not being designed to replace those games. The only way it could “kill” EQ or EQII is by being such a phenomenally better game that everyone flocks to it. Many miles to go before we sleep." - from Dave Georgeson on the EQ2 forums back in June
They claim they are "returning to the original Everquest style of play" which I hope isn't just abunch of bullshit.

I am not sure how much of this is true, but from this article, I was disappointed:
Everquest Next had two pre-production builds proposed.
one build was extensive with a large budget of 100 million dollars. It was Everquest on steroids, thats its nickname around the water cooler.
the other build proposal is extremely casual. Its known around the cooler as everquest invades farmville. its budget is very small, 20 million dollars.
the farmville version was approved.
in addition, more cuts are coming within SOE. Several hundred subcontract workers have 6 month contracts expire december 31st. They will not be renewed
basically the team that was working on the Everquest on Steroids build lost the contest and is being let go

It seems Sony's been doing alot of flip-flopping in the past year when deciding on what the hell kind of game they want to make. Judging by some twitter responses and things from the devs, I think SoE's gameplan changed when all those F2P switches didn't attract anybody for any time at all. They might actually try to make this a decent game.
But, I doubt it. Games can only be mass-produced, generic, linear, easy, hunks of pretty-gfx covered shit nowadays, and it makes me sad.

Not gonna lie, the beta is good. Like, if it was a one time 60 dollar fee, I would buy it in a heart beat as is. The problem is they're going to make it f2p with a subscription option, and the real issue is whether or not they're going to be reasonable with the f2p or pull EQ/EQ2 and make it almost unplayable unless you sub.

$50 says EQ next will have Rift/GW2 type events in it. Seems to be the new norm getting away from the "!" or "?" NPC style gameplay.
Problem is what I lked about EQ1 won't ever be an option in a new game because when I started Kunark was already out and Velious soon after. So there was a lot of zone choices. Which meant for under used zones allowign some sort of gear distinction. New games everyone follows the same path, same gear sets, same quest paths. No real sense of being a nomad like EQ1 gave.
Having said that I do like features such as instances and dungeon finders for dungeons. Nothing worse than taking 1-2 hrs putting a group together then having to go.
In the end it's hard to please everyone, I may just have to rely on lore and old friends to make the game worthwhile :) I like seeing some old zones redone too. Playing EQ2 Rise of Kunark was neat to see zones redone and lore changes. Such as who's running the show in Karnors Castle now in EQ2. I didn't see that coming.

I'd like an mmo that focuses around exploration, EQ and WoW had this feeling back when they launched but after you learn everything you're kinda screwed. One of the things I liked about EVE so much is the ability to go into a system twice to explore, and new things being available and the entire uncharted Wormhole system which brought you even more ~~mystery and discovery~~.
Popping into a wormhole sector with no chat, no map, and nothing but ruins, drones, and possibly hostile ships on your scan was an amazing feeling (and paranoia inducing)

EVE is a great concept for a game, but it ultimately didn't hold my interest long term, once i realized i was just going to be mining or sitting at a gate waiting to 1 shot someone.

id play EQ Next based on very few "must haves"
1. No "go here" arrows or quest dialogue
2. world bosses and AoW-like mobs that're implemented without feasible ways to kill them.
3. unforgiving world

cheeply and easily produced professional content in blender
EQ next is in your hands, just call it something else.
I would do it but i'm slightly retarded and dumb.
Also SoE cant keep litigating and controlling the market forever.
The way to beat the game is promise server and client source after X years, you can still produce art and keep trademarks, but fuckit let the original art out too. if you MIT or opensource the art you can build off of community effort and still charge a small fee for the package/scripting/next big texture release

The above model keeps costs and staff low on your end so you can keep it garage box level but still make decent money while it gets big like minecraft or dwarf fortress, yes you can do it for free, if its good you will get the support you need to keep doing it and probably live comftorbley until you pass on the torch.

err yeah soe is realeasing community content in the market place soon anyway so their basically downsizing to do the same thing
but we can do it better then the facsist corporate pigs

Maybe SOE could try the EA model of release 60% of the game you're planning to release at $60/£40, then just half force a "premium" down their throat if they want the shinies that those paying for extras are so keen to wave around?
That would then make up the shortfall in downsizing the budget (if done properly).
Oh yes, DLC is the future (sadly, very sadly)...
