I am a level 14 necro, and I haven't been able to find a way to organize my spellbook that I really like. How do you have your spellbook organized? What do you do when you get a batch of new spells? :confused:
This is only going to get worse as I get more spells, so I need to get my act together soon! Thanks in advance for your ideas and suggestions. :)

Honestly, since you can save spell defaults in the new UI - there is no need to organizer it in any way. Just save different spell loads..
Buffs
Main
Healing
CC
etc.
Generally there are 6-8 different line of spells for each class. I usually put the old lines in the back of the book.

Right click spell gem slot FTW.

I always copied ALL my old spells (the ones being replaced with something new) way to the back of my book. So the stuff in the front part of the book was always current
Then I'd have it organized into groups similar to what Kainzo mentioned.
For example on my old chanter in classic, I think I had something like...
Page 1,2 -> Buffs
Page 3,4 -> Offensive spells (nukes, dots, root)
Page 5,6 -> Charm/Pet/pet buffs
Page 7,8 -> Crowd Control
Page 9,10 -> Utilities
Page 11,12 -> Illusions
Page 13,14 -> Tradeskills and Misc
Then I had a bank of hot buttons...
"Buffs" would map to /book 1
"Offense" would map to /book 3
etc.
Not strictly necessary anymore due to the new client, but I still try to keep it organized like this.

Same here. Whenever I scribe a spell that is a total upgrade to a previous spell, I move it all the way to the back of the book. The exception to this is if if the old spell still has its uses in which case I will just push it back to my lesser used spells.
The format I usually follow:
page 1: Buffs that can be cast on anyone
page 2: most commonly used detrimental spells
page 3: self only (or pet only) buffs
page 4: lesser used or situation detrimental spells (like AoE spells)
page 5-6: Illusions (if a chanter), ports (if druid or wizard)
page 7-8: tradeskill spells, summon spells, etc.
Obviously this will vary greatly depending on class.

Have always done the same as the two posts above. Moved the spells to the back out of the way, but also use the save spell/load spell lists depending on the situation.

The way I do it is I put my spells in exact order by level and then alphabetically. So my level 50 spells are all the way at the end of the book and my level 1 spells are at the front. If I don't buy a particular spell I leave a gap where it should go for when I do get it. It was actually a little upsetting cause at level 20 I missed one slot, so when I hit level 50 I realized something was off and I had to shift all my spells.

Put mine in order of spell effect, then level. Different effects go on different pages (unless there's not many of that type). The only exceptions are gate and bind on page 1.

I know I don't have as many spells as most casters since I'm hybrid, but every new spell level for me, I just go to a different page.
Level 9 spells on page 1, level 15 spells on page 2, etc.

My necro has so goddamned many spells his are all messed up. My clerics are a bit neater. Both of them though I have the most commonly used spells on the first two pages.

I prefer grouping spells by icon\spell line with older spells > newer spells arranged on the page. At higher levels I usually delete or move the lowest level spells to the back of the book. This allows me to flip through my book fast and visually identify spell lines without having to read through the names. If I ever log into a friends char and they have spells all mixed in and scribed by level I hate it. I find myself flipping through way too much saying "where the hell is gate?" Etc

I did the exact same thing. I'm a little bit OCD like that. Plus, as you said, it was helpful in seeing which spells I was missing at a glance. I kept a printout of all my spells in my EQ binder (along with zone maps) and checked them off as I got them.
I had a /book ## hotkey set up to jump to the last page of my book.
This is probably one of the best ways to go these days, since we can right-click spellgems and save spell sets.

This is very helpful, guys - thanks! I think I prefer the idea of keeping the current level spells at the front rather than at the back.
How do you save spell sets/lists? I've never tried that and don't know how to do it, but it sounds like it would help. Of course I do know how to right-click and move them around. I'm a n00b but not THAT bad! LOL
Thanks again and keep those ideas and pix coming! :)
There is a small spell book at the bottom of your spell icons. Click on that and it gives you options.

How to use the spell menus/sets.
Let's call the thing you memorize your spells into (with 8 slots) your Spell Gems.
Right-click an empty Spell Gem to bring up a menu with a categorized list of all the spells in your book. Navigate through, left click to memorize it into that slot.
Lather rinse, repeat for your 8 spells.
Right-click the little spellbook icon at the bottom of the Spell Gems to access a new menu; Save and Load Spell Sets.
Handy Tricks:
If you wipe out your Spell Gems and add only one or two spells then save that spell set, it can be very handy. It will only remove and mem spells for those one or two slots!
Example:
Let's use a quick example with a Shaman... not saying this is ideal, just quick example:
Group 1 Set
1: Slow
2: Malo
3: Heal
4: Regen
5: Canni
6: DoT
7: DoT
8: SoW
Quick Buffs
1-5: Empty
6: Focus
7: STR Buff
8: STA Buff
So after the initial buffs at the start of the group, using a full buff spell set I didn't demonstrate here, I load up my Group 1 set. Some buffs drop that I need to redo while pulls are still going on. I load up the Quick Buffs set, and spells 1-5 stay as-is so I can heal, slow and Canni as need be. 6-8 swap to my buffs so I can cast them.
There's a lot of situations where this is useful: long recast spells like DA or Night's Dark Terror, you want those to not be overwritten so keep those in say Slot 8 and have none of your spell sets (besides your base set) include that spell gem in their layout.
Hope that helps!

I used to just put all of my latest buffs on the first page (1 and 2), because those were the spells changed out most often. Older spells went to the back of the book. On page 3, the left page when you turn it, I put the 8 spells that I would always mem after dying.
Honestly though, I use the right-click method to change my spells now. No, it's not classic, but it's there, and I'm too lazy to organize my spell book :p

Best thing ever, right click the emtpy gem slot. I use to be extremely anal about keeping my spells organized on live but since this option is client side I believe I just use it all the time.

I don't use the newer UI. I don't think the button is there for presets on the older looking one.

I organize my spellbook from page 50 backwards to page one, and seperate the spells into the effect i.e. summon pet, dd, aoe, flux, burnout, etc. I keep the most useful spells on pages 1-4 and leave gaps where they would fit in the appropriate dd page and everything is organized by lvl. It took me a few hours to set it up but it allows me to quickly find a spell and answer questions from younger mages. I highly recommend organizing from the last page to avoid clicking a few dozen arrows when opening spelbook

I like to organize by use.
First two pages are healing spells and stat buffs.
3 and 4 are debuffs, dots and nukes.
5 and 6 are utility and uncommon buffs such as spirit sight, enduring breath, ultravision .etc.
7 and 8 are bind/gate/summon spells, as well as pets.

Anyone who actually opens their spell book for anything other than scribing new spells is doing it wrong.

If you use the UI from the P99 set up page you can't make those silly spell gem sets to my knowledge. Even if there is some way to do so it's not classic : P Neither is right clicking the gems. I can also probably find all of my common spells faster than someone who right clicks since I usually have my most used abilities on the first couple of pages.

I'm so glad I'm not the only person who does this. I think your the 2nd person including me that I know of.
I'm the 3rd then, because I do the same.
What I do is have the first page be what my standard "Solo set" of spells would be, in order, so if I'm soloing all I do is mem the first page in order onto my spell slots, page 2 is all my current buffs, roughly in the logical order to cast them. Page 3/4 would be all kinds of other often used spells that wouldn't be memmed or cast constantly, like bind, camo, pack buffs, etc.
I prefer this method to saving spell sets because generally there will generally be slight difference in what is similar groups/situations that lead to this vs. that being a more prudent choice to keep memmed.
