Gonna be a few hours before I can finally install the game, but I'm way excited about playing right now so I'm gonna obsess a little :P
I want to make a cleric! Is this a good choice? It's fun to heal. There isn't a disproportionate number of clerics here, is there? I'm having a bit of a hard time picking a race, too. Dwarves are ugly, so they're out. Thinking high elf or dark elf. Will going dark elf seriously limit me in any ways, like with quests?
How hard is it to find groups, when leveling? Is there much of a low-end population to exp with, or will I mainly be on my own? And how friendly are the people here, in general?
It's such a shame that the red server has a blah population. EQ without PvP isn't nearly as much fun, but you can't play the game without others :/

cleric is always a good choice, cant think of any cons right off the bat with going DE, they have pretty good stats for clerics, outside of having bad faction in good cities i dont see a problem

Innoruuk worshipping clerics, which include dark elves obviously, can get the Regent Symbol of Innoruuk, giving the cleric access to snare. You'll have a little trouble doing the Aegis of Life quest if you had planned on that. It's doable, though. Humans and Erudites can do the Paineel quests. Dwarves have very nice cultural armor for the moment, but it's a mistake in the itemization and should be nerfed--someone put the wrong era of cultural into the database. Halflings level a little faster than everyone else and get hide and sneak. Your dark elf will have hide, which is pretty useful.
You'll find groups playing a cleric. Welcome and good luck.

Clerics are always needed and Dark Elf is probably the best choice (Hide / Snare).

If you hit all the popular spots like EC, crushbone, oasis, etc you will almost always be able to find a group. And people seem to really friendly for the most part, the dickery seems to start when end game stuff is concerned, which is a long ways away for you anyway.

Thanks, everyone! :)
I made a dark elf cleric, and noticed that there are a few people running around with me, killing snakes :P
Another question: how do rangers perform here, and are there tons of them? My first EQ character was a ranger, and I'm interested to know just how bad they are lol.

Rangers solo okay up to 50 if they're heavily twinked. After that it gets painful. People will take rangers in a group if they really, really need snare, but you're going to spend a lot of time LFG. Most xp groups try to build tank/chanter/cleric/monk/rogue, which leaves one slot for someone else. If you really love playing a ranger, go for it, but don't expect it to be easy.

Rangers are by far and away the most worthless class in p1999. They're a constant running joke of the server. But ur cleric is top notch.
When do halfling rangers come about? :P
Never on this server according to the timeline, post-Luclin addition. If it does occur, it will be a long way off.

We wanted to start by letting everyone know how grateful we are for all
of the suggestions for improvements that we've received both in EMail
and on the various class and server boards. We appreciate all the help
you've provided us.
** Changes for Low Level Characters **
- Characters no longer lose experience for death below level 11
- Characters now begin first level with a stack of 20 food and drink
- Items no longer appear on a corpse if you are below level 10, they
reappear with the character
- When a character "dings" level 10 you will be informed that your
items will now be on your corpse
- Characters will no longer appear with a Tome of Discord. They must
get one from the Priest of Discord
- New resurrection, evacuate and corpse summoning spells have been
added at lower levels
- We've moved the newbie bind points closer to where characters first
start out, not outside in their newbie areas
- Halflings and Gnomes have new classes available to them: Halfling
Rangers and Paladins as well as Gnome ShadowKnights and Paladins. All
of the necessary NPCs and items should be available for these new
classes

confirmed: has never played with a good ranger.
seriously im all but sick of the ranger hate, about the only thing i can think of they have going against them is the xp penalty which will hopefully be going away soonish. ya obviously they arent as good of tanks and war/sk/pal, obviously they wont do the dps of a monk/rogue. does this make them "useless?" well i guess from a min/max perspective in xp groups it does, but their their utility can more than make up for these short comings.

Rangers get a bad rap. Whether founded in reality or not, they just do and you would have to deal with that.

lol, no. Later cultural for most every race makes the initial (current) dwarf stuff look very very weak. It's the best of the early stuff, yes, significantly better than other races, yes, but Verant didn't insist on carrying that particular mistake forward later on.

I'll probably make a ranger alt once my cleric gets some levels and low-end twink gear.
Another question! :P
I love Kelethin, Felwithe, CB and UR; probably because I grew up there with my elf characters. Can I get my faction up in most of Kelethin and Felwithe somehow, starting with the orcs obviously? And what Neriak factions are lowered by killing the orcs, is it just the warrior guild? Are there any quests this would make my dark elf cleric unable to do? It would be neat to exp in that area again, but might be kinda hard to train, sell and buy spells :P
Oh and when does the Innoruuk neck quest start? What is the item even called? Thanks much!

I'm sure it's possible - but it would take a VERY long time. Just plan ahead and pack your spells, sell to druid ring vendors, and trade little coins out with noobs when you can. You can also change your coins by buying/selling things from a vendor. If they have the right kinds of junk on them, you don't lose that much in the transactions. Indigo Brotherhood will bottom out pretty fast if you level in CB, but that shouldn't be too big of a deal.
Also - some cleric spells are sold by druid ring vendors, so you could spend a big chunk of copper/silver on those if you plan ahead.

Great, thanks! It looks like this will be kind of hard, but once I can start getting CB belts to sell things should improve. Does anyone know if I can use the evil gnome cleric trainer to train med and dodge?
And what do stacks of bone chips, stacks of spiderling/spider silk, low quality wolf skins, black wolf skins and firebeetle eyes normally go for? :P

Rangers are pretty good till level 50 if, and I mean if, you are a total Twink on one. Fungi required. I have a Ranger and they just can not get hit and live without out great gear. You may live but you will spend all day killing 6 mobs. Just Kidding. Well maybe 9 mobs. You need to Bow Kite them solo to get the mob down to like 50% and then melee the mob with snare and that works pretty well. The problem with that is you go through 500 arrows a day. If you have the Tolans bracer and are level 45 then not as bad. But the summoned arrows sort of suck for damage. And as a Cleric I hate them in groups to heal. A total mana sink.
But it is a shame. They have a ton of good skills and spells. But they suck on here on average trust me. Until AA"s came out they were crap. And when Velious comes out they suck even more because mobs hit for a ton more. But they do get the spell Panic Animal which means you can fear kite animals. That will help trust me. Their Epic's are nice also. Haste and slow.

If you're ever playing the quiet hours, consider the cleric 1-50+ soloing guide down in the "Priests" section. It's a little something I'm working on when I get the chance :)
Dark elf was definitely a good choice by the way ;)
