I started my first caster and I plan to group as much as possible, but when I'm soloing, what's the best way to heal myself while fighting? Are there a series of commands that will target me, heal me, then re-target the mob that I can make into a button? Trying to click the mob or hit a function key can be a pain.

/target Hefty
/cast 2
/cast 2 (just in case I fizzle?)
/now-what-do-I-do-to-re-target-mob??

Thanks.

Nothing you can do in a hotkey macro like that to retarget the mob, however, there are several targetting keys you can set up in the options that are of use:

Toggle last two targets, and Toggle target and myself should be of use to you... By default they are both unbound...

Thanks! I've set my delete key to toggle. I can live with that. Thanks for going the extra mile with the screenshot too.

I set "target nearest npc" to tab. Works great.. until you target the wrong npc. :P

Tab: switches between you and your current target.

So, say your heal spell is in slot 6, if you hit Tab - 6 - Tab, you can heal yourself and retarget the mob. WIth a little practice you can do it pretty quickly. You only need to have yourself targeted when you START casting the heal.

I used this method a lot when I was porcupining as a young druid.

My set up is

Cycle NPC = Del
Cycle PC = Ins
and tab does the switch between target - myself - target.

Simples.

tallen makes a good point, you only have to target yourself for the start of the cast, you can go ahead and tab again to retarget the mob so that once the heal casts you are already ready already. Only problem is if you get interupted you will need to tab again to recast, but the good side of this is at least you might get a swing in before you have to try and re cast your sell.

another note is unless your going to die, watch your combat log and cast between your swings. this will keep your dps going while your healing or any other casting such as debuffs or nukes or whatever. You also can watch the NPCs attacks and time your casts after he attacks so you can try and get that spell off before his next round of attacks come in that way you have a better chance of not being interrupted.

I bind "t" as nearest target, and "tab" as target self. Sending a tell is not a life or death situation, so I can take the time to type /t.

Thats the way I've always played *shrug*

For me, Tab is my nearest target. But I had a cleric for quite some time, so using the Function keys are just second nature to me now. F1, Alt 1 (or 2 depending), Tab to get my target back.
