View Full Version : Mob Aggro: Does anyone remember...?

On Live when someone ran a mob or group of mobs and it passed near others, many of the monsters would automatically jump off of the train and attack people that they passed by.
I'm not talking about social aggro. I'm talking by a mob peeling off its original aggroer for NO reason and just attacking you when you were completely idle and not doing anything.

I positively remember this happening with undead mobs, but I'm not sure about others.
On p99 the only times I've had this happen is if I'm fighting something, and somebody runs by me with mobs that don't have any additional agro built on them. The pursuing mobs will stop chasing the person and hit me instead.

Yes I remember this with Undead mobs too.
I know this happened for a fact because a 13-year-old me on Veeshan thought it was really funny to train croc groups in Oasis with Spectres. I did this by just aggroing the spectres then running to the docks, and I didn't ever zone or camp.. As long as the train chasing me passed near somebody that was low level they would aggro them and swarm them and kill them.

I remember this on all mobs (because of being a monk.... pulling) - if you did not damage them with at least one point of damage, they would "peel off" of you and agro onto others. The people they agrod to didnt have to do anything but just be there to get agro - this is why training people was so easy on live....

i used to summon a sand giant as a mage (monster summoning) and run to docks scream SG to docks... used to scatter people. some would even shout "named SG at the docks" and people would all stand around it trying to attack it

spiders in velks would constantly peel off if you didn't attack them if they ran past someone else that was fighting. I had to make sure i always did damage to any spider i pulled.
This may have been a social agro mechanic over ruling prox agro. If i did any damage at all they would not switch target
There is a bug report thread last month, if you have additional evidence of this mechanic it would be greatly appreciated.

Fom the original classic EQ Atlas entry for Befallen:
First off, the trains can be atrocious. There is a very low level area (the 1st floor) and a quite high level area (3rd floor). On the 3rd floor (well, on any floor actually) it is very easy to be swarmed and overwhelmed, and many people, if they don't die, will then be running for the exit. This causes problems for the people who lie along their path. Many of the monsters will jump off of the train and attack people that they pass by, but even worse is what happens when the person that all the monsters are chasing either zones or dies, and that is that the entire train walks back down to its level again. Along the way, they will attack anyone within their frenzy radius (which is almost the whole dungeon, it is so small). The trains are also more deadly because, if you are fleeing them, you have to somehow try and open locked doors from your inventory screen while being slammed.

I don't remember that, but I definitely remember social aggro from trains.
Maybe some people are mistaking RETURNING trains for departing ones.

Surprising, I know, but I'm not talking about returning trains. Say you're running to the zoneline with 10 mobs behind you and run past an innocent bystander minding his own business. Some or all of the mobs would instantly swarm the innocent bystander and attack him.
I know it sounds crazy but it really did exist this way on live. Or at least it did for Undead mobs and Sand Giants.. I'm not 100% sure if it did for everyone else.

I remember on my bard when i was level 20-30ish running Cazel around in Oasis and staying way way out of range so people wouldn't know it was me and he would destroy everyone in his path. Was extremely hilarious for my immature self at 15. He would attack everyone at docks and all over even though he was trying to get to me. I have not tried that here. Not as fun as when i was 15.

It 100% worked this way on live with undead or normal mobs. I would train people all the time using the run by and agro with sow and then train people and they would never know what hit them.
Raiding back in the day i remember distinctly casters were not supposed to be sitting while raiding fear due to pulled mobs jumping from the puller to the people sitting as sitting carried more agro than the proximity or minimum damage of the pull.
I dont know if they plan on fixing this but its one of the things that was classic that i wouldnt care to see return as then people would be able to train very easily for kicks and you would never know who did it.

I wouldn't be surprised if sitting caused that; sitting changes aggro. I don't remember this specifically, though. But then again I only played 2 or at most 3 months in 1999. Then I played in 2001 and 2002.
I got a soft spot for tough aggro mechanics like that. I get lazy when playing games and it's easy to go afk or sit without thinking about it. But I've always liked monsters to do things that made sense; like hit the most vulnerable person. But if monsters were too smart it'd be a lot harder to kill them, so...
But honest I'd like to see some games put more pressure on us; aka smart monsters. I think it'd be better if only the smart(er) monsters did it or the bosses. Otherwise, it could get a bit tedious. On hte other hand, I don't expect monsters to hand me a kill. In fact, if I get handed a kill it's the surest sign I'll lose interest in the game. But the line between a monster that makes combat annoying and a monster that makes it challenging is perhaps fuzzy. A monster shouldn't always attack the most vulnerable person or make the smartest choice. If they do then that gives players no leeway. But if a monster is so dumb that they just stand there limp and let you kill them and never display even the slightest hint of smartness then, to me anyway, it's very unexciting.

i remember that mechanics too, but i have a strong feeling it only worked for mobs that were kos out of level - ala agro even if you were 50 levels above then - such as undead and some few others. Wasn't the case with say gnolls or orcs though.

you guys didnt realize what you were doing or how agro worked. If you casted a buff within proximity or healed anyone in proximity or were fighting or merely attempting to cast in proximity of the train then that action would put u on the agro list. Whatever action puts u on the list, the proximity of you to the train as opposed to other people agroed on the train also gives the mobs a priority to come smash you if you are within a certain range as to make it easy for them remove you.
