Hi all. I haven't played EQ in many years, and decided to try out the official servers since it is now Free to Play. While I started getting sucked in again, I realized that all of the expansions seemed to have muddled the game. I want the original game again, and this server appears to deliver.
I should be in game soon, and had a few questions.
How is levelling? Is it impossible to find groups? If I'll need to solo my way through much of the game, I'll have to pick a class appropriately.
Were any concessions made to ease of use, or is it a flat out copy/paste of the game Kunark era? IE: XP race/hybrid penalties, mana regen/spellbook staring contests, etc.
Any roleplay at all? How is the community in general, pretty active in chat?
Thanks for your time.

Welcome back, ill answer as accurate as possible:

Certainly not impossible to get a group, especially at peak hours. However a full group is hard to see compared to Live. I suggest picking a class that suits you better than thinking of Solo able. And even with prior thinking, every class except maybe rogues can give a shot to soloing in the time u cant/want to find a group.

The two great non classic i have found so far in P1999 are item linking and not have to stare book in order to regen mana. Penalties and so, are on. Check Wiki for further advise.

Little Roleplay, the community is nice.
I hope to see you soon, seek me in game for hints/tips anytime.
Cheers

In my experience (only 16 now) the population is very comfortable. Enough people to find groups, but no so many that things are as overcamped as live.

They try to keep it as close to classic as reasonably possible. Some things aren't the same because of the UI, which P99 has no control over. For example, there is no spellbook staring, but it would be there if they could change the UI. Hybrid penalties are here for the time being, and I think they'll be removed eventually as they were in Velious.
Any roleplay at all?
Not much to speak of, but I will be creating a roleplay guild when I have five interested people on at the same time. If you're one of them, put Vellatri on your friends list and I'll do the same. See Roleplay Guild (http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=87167) for a background.

Thanks for the responses, server looks good to go. I logged in very briefly before I left for work, brought back some memories. I'd forgotten about the LOADING, PLEASE WAIT and the blocky troll textures. =) Think I'll be switching to a caster class after stumbling around the swamp in my underwear for a bit, losing fist fights with skeletons. Maybe Ill try an Enchanter, I never got around to one in Classic.
Sitting at work, pretty excited lol. See you out there.

Hey, I am new as well. (Well, so new I haven't gotten everything set-up yet.)
I snagged a copy of titanium online for a reasonable price and am currently waiting for it to show up.
I was curious about these exact questions and was happy to find the answers to them!
(However I hope I can install titanium/everything else needed without much issue. As I have original EQ installed atm, but I am sure I can follow the directions and get it done :)
I plan on playing Either ...
A Bard (they are fun, i've played them before.)
A druid (great for porting around, sow, and I've played it before/enjoyed it.)
A shaman (shrink is fun, I don't care who you are. Never really played a Shaman before though.)
An enchanter (everyone loves mana regen. Plus I loved my enchanter way back when. Mezzing is fun(
A necro (since corpse runs are in, I feel this might help out the community as a whole. Plus necros solo really well right? Never played a necro.)
A shadownight (I enjoyed my shadowknight when Fippy Darkpaw progression server was live..till about level 25.)
We will see though when I actually get in game! Looking forward to hour and a half long corpse runs! lol :P
And one more note: I am not the Spoonerism from youtube. I happened to begin using this name not knowing that some guy on youtube that is popular is using it too. I am using it for the word, Spoonerism, which is switching the first 2 letters of 2 words. Like: Pink Truck ---> Tink Pruck. <--that is a spoonerism :P

First night is in the books. My dark elf enchanter' Malakhai, made it to level 3. I couldnt believe I lost my first fight one on one with an even conn snake. Sure is a different world than current live eq. I also had to relearn some lessons. Like typing /l BEFORE you die. Also, only buy the spells you absolutely need, lest you run out of food heh. Good to be back.
Aha, it's bittersweet isn't it :P I quit eq shortly after LDON, started playing a couple months before luclin.. started playing WoW in it's closed beta in august of 04, and played for almost 8 consecutive years..t aking 1 or 2 two to six month breaks in 8 years.. and after going back to this I feel like I'm mentally handicapped :P

Awesome, isn't it?
I decided to try P99 with a friend. This friend was a WoW veteran of several years and never played another MMORPG. Over lunch, I'd tell tales of the good old days when our characters walked uphill both ways through 6 feet of snow to exchange our silver for plat at the bank. After traveling naked from the bank to the middle of a dungeon on a corpse recovery. (Corpse recovery? What the hell?)
This friend had an awesome time starting out. She took so long figuring out what's what in kelethin that she ran out of food. Then she kept dying to mobs because she was starving, and couldn't get the money she needed for food, much less spells or gear. She also lost a corpse because she had no clue where that orc killed her in Gfay. After she eventually overcame that hurdle, I arrived via boat with a set of studded that I crafted, which made life a bit easier. Her druid is now level 14, so she's thrilled to have a decent DoT, SoW, and Bind.
My friend actually likes the fact that EQ is pretty hardcore, and doesn't hold your hand. It's a lot harder to have a successful evening if your group isn't coordinated. Aggro and crowd management actually means something in this game. I'm finding that there are a lot of teeny details I didn't notice before, like the fact that almost anything you loot can be used for something, whether it be a tradeskill or a ridiculously useless quest. There's so much subtle content in this game.
You might see the pair of us running around. (I'm a 16 DE Shadowknight.) I think we'll be headed to Highpass soon. Be sure to say "Hi" to Vellatri and Velivia.

I laughed out loud. I shared this with a a coworker of mine whose first MMO was WoW and he talks about WoW all the time. And I tell him about EQ. Neither one of us can get the other to switch games. I can't blame him for not wanting to switch from WoW, especially since it was his first MMO, just like EQ was my first. But I think this unofficially proves that EQ > WoW when it comes to challenge =)
