Hey all Happy New Year! Hope you guys had more fun than me working in a bar that night :P
I have a question: spend plat on gear for my Mage or should I just save every plat to twink out a Warrior or Monk to go with my wife's shaman or cleric, which is my ultimate goal. Will buying gear for my Mage even help at all?

I leveled my mage to 50 in his newbie robe then got Apothic robe / gear. Other than a few random pieces I was given or found, he was naked. In my opinion gear on a mage is sort of a waste other than if you were buying resists for raiding.
All good mages also have a "epic" nest egg fund where they dream of retiring to...
Have some fun and twink a gear dependent character or help your wife's mana pool on her healers.

Yeah I agree. A Mage or a Necro doesn't really need any gear.

Hijacking my own thread here, maybe someone can clear this up for me. What determines chances to hit for melee? Is it STR/ATK or is it DEX? I have never gotten a straight answer on this and have dug on the wiki for the past hour while i farm the orc highway.

Attack for the most part. If I'm not mistaken, dex plays absolutely zero role in determining whether you hit or not.
Dex does help with crits and procs, however

Casters need zero gears for levelling up, maybe except for jboots.
If u r wife is playing shaman, u won't need jboots even, so u might wanna save up ur plat to get her a ceremonial iksar chestplate instead, it will benefit her more than any other gears.

you don't need gear, but do try to get your summoning focus items. They'll help more than anything prior to epic

EDIT: If you want to play a Monk or Warrior ultimately, just do it now. Don't level up another character so you can level up a character. (insert Yo dawg meme here) After doing this myself multiple times, I regret the time /played I wasted on live and here playing a caster instead of doing what I really wanted.
If you really want to go that route, buy your mage 55hp 5 ac rings and save up to buy black sapphire earrings and a necklace. Those give a lot of bang for your buck, don't depreciate in value, and are great for future twinks.
You'd be surprised how much that additional hp helps a caster.
But yeah - quest your focus items quickly. Those are a tremendous help.
