View Full Version : New to Project 1999 - Can't Access Server

A good friend of mine told me about Project 1999 and I've been extremely excited about the prospect of playing; however, I'm unable to get to the character creation screen. Every time I try to select any server (I've tried other servers than p99 red and blue), my client will hang up for about 30-45 seconds, and then it reverts back to the login screen. The first time this happens when I load the client, no error message appears. When attempted a second time I've been given the infamous 1017 error.

The computer I'm running is an alienware m11x r2. Processor is i7 640LM and my GPU is the 335M GT nvidia. All drivers have been updated.

I've tried numerous solutions, so to name a few: reinstalling EQTitanium with no virus protection active, reinstalling with both EQTitanium and EQemu inside and outside the Program Files (x86) directory, using WinEQ2 to address the multiple cores I have, patching a fresh install with my firewall and anti-virus turned completely off (super scary to do), turning off Windows Aero theme and running Windows 7 Basic, running everything as admin, and running everything as Windows XP compatible.

Naturally other games (dragon age: origins, medieval total war 2, and the new x-com) that I play regularly haven't had any performance issues.

One thing that I'm afraid might be happening is a conflict with the resolution my computer has. Since it's a m11x, the display is unique and has unique resolution settings that are not equivalent to the options available by EQ. To compensate for this I've used Duxa to run EQ in windowed mode at 1280x800 while my desktop resolution remains at 1366x768 (recommended setting).

As you can see I'm getting desperate for solutions and I feel like I'm grasping at straws. If you have any ideas or professional advice to offer I'm open to suggestions.

When you load the Launcher, are you selecting R99 or P99 to download the files for the server? If you don't update the game for the server it will not connect.

I've been selecting P99 from the server list on EQemu every time. I've tried turning off my firewall and anti-virus for the patch as well, but the problem has persisted.

I'd say it's safe to say two things
1. resolution isn't a problem
2. my connection is lost during authentication

Any advice on how to remedy this?

I am trying to think of what your issue is... however I think it may be something more related to windows than anything.

I use Windows 8 on bootcamp on my mac. There are always problems with it. Stopping and going, or other network related issues. Most importantly no sound.

Now when I run it on My Mac with Winewrapper, it works great. No issues, in fact it works amazing.

So...

It we look at your issue make sure that you have all your .net features loaded in etc.

What exactly did you do during the install?

You got a clean copy of titanium?

May I suggest Duxa's installer.... it did the trick for me.

What I would recomend. Clear EVERYTHING off. reinstall EQ titanium. The do DUXA all in one installer. See if that clears it up.

Its just curious that it wont connect to the EQEMU server ... regardless of the connection or not you need to connect to that. The game will runw ith duo processor. It just wont work great sometimes.

You may have some patch files all jacked up, or you may just be missing some vital EQEMU files.

Follow Duxa's method and report back. START FRESH.

PS im here all night..... crying babies and all gonna keep me up.

Thanks for the camaraderie. I have work early in the morning, so I can't be up to much longer.... To hell with it! I'll give it the old college try.

You mention that I'm not connecting to the EQEMU server. That has me thinking it could be the problem. I did give it another go just now with the firewall off :(, and here's the results:

EQEMU I'm using was downloaded as a simple zip file with everything just being extracted and it's good to go. Not sure how those files could be truncated or corrupted.

Please keep in mind I know next to nothing about programming, networking, IT, and general computer science. I have great respect for those who do. :D

Although you are making it past the server select screen are you doing this over a Wireless or Wired connection?

OK... do this... DELETE EVERYTHING that you installed.

EQEMU needs to patch the files.

DUXA has built everything you need into his all in one installer. Once you reinstall EQ. run his all in one installer.... its at the top of the Tech support page.

His installer will patch all your files and patch EQ EMU.... Try that. its a dummy proof method.

teknically brings up a good point. You may need to open the ports on your wi fi. But run the patcher first, then worry about that. I did not need to open any ports up and I run a pretty strict network in my home, it pisses my husband off.

So far even this has not stoped it. I run 2 firewalls and security. Still no issue.

Also when you run the DUXA all in one. make sure you give it admin priviliages. Right click and check the box etc.

I'm wireless, and it would be pretty impossible for me to connect as a LAN because of certain... logistics. I did perform connection test by pinging eqemulator.com and eqemulator.net both came back with 0 lost and avg time of 50ms. I also just did a speed test on speedtest.net and got 16.21 mbps download and 4.21 mbps upload, so it's hard to believe that it's my connection. I can try to connect over LAN, but I'll save that as a later test for now.

I've already done this about 4 times. :( BUT I'll give it another go if it buys me more of your assistance. It's not at all to difficult to re-install this tiny game and run the patching.

I'm guessing that's your problem right there. try changing desktop reso to 800x600. At the login screen, hit your options button and choose the same reso. Once you get in game, the titanium client has a lot more options for diferent resos. You wont have to actually play at that reso but you may have to grit through it to get into game, but i highly doubt there is a 1366x768 reso in titanium, so you may need to compensate

I already tried exactly that. Set the desktop resolution to 800x600 32-bit and restarted. Everything goes smooth until I try to get to the character creation screen. Same failed results.

Thanks for pitching in with ideas though! Keep them coming because my friend's necro is already at level 5. Can't let him get to far ahead. :p

Alrighty everyone. The issue has been RESOLVED. You will not believe what the problem was...

I kept focusing on the authentication lines in the log. It would show a connection, and then failure to authenticate. My friend and I finally surmised that the problem had to be with my account. We used a computer that had been able to connect and play on the p99 servers to login on my account, and BAM the same exact error and problem was reproduced. So we immediately knew the problem wasn't with my computer, software, etc.

I promise I followed all the steps in the account setup processes. Something must of goofed during the authentication process of my account... OR the fact that my login for the servers was: Era'viss. Using the character ' might have been an ineligible selection. Only way to disprove this is if anyone else out there has that character in their login...

Well we were able to make a new server account, and bingo it works perfectly. I'm now level 3 on my druid, and I'm super excited to join all of you in this wonderful gift that is Project 1999.

Thank you all for the help you provided!

So your account login name can't be the same as your forum name?

So your account login name can't be the same as your forum name?

Well I can't say yes or no with any confidence on that. All I can say is if you get the exact same error when attempting to login, and your log reads the same as mine did then there is a problem with your server account.

Because this Project 1999 and EQemu are both entirely gifts (that we can donate towards) given to us gamers, I'm not sure how anyone can have an account maintenanced or reviewed to clear-up this issue. My fix was to just create a new server account. This worked great for me because I had no characters that I would of lost.

By the way, my druid is already up to level 6! I freaking love Project 1999!!! So many memories of this great game. :p

Ok so I'm having the Error 1017 issue as well. I've discovered I can log into my account on my laptop but as of two days ago I still can't log on through my desktop. I have done several reinstalls and did the Getting Started steps exactly as they are on the forums and still no result. Any ideas?

Era'viss

Let's try to get a good idea of what is actually happening first. These errors don't tell us much on their own.

First do a quick restart of your computer. Then after you're fully booted-up try to log into EQ just once. After it fails to connect close out completely. Then go into your EQ directory. You should see a folder called Logs. In that folder is a file called dbg.txt. Open this file with notepad, and copy everything you see, and post it here.

I'm hoping that your log will shed some light on which part of the connection process is going wrong.

Try uninstalling/turning off any firewalls or programs you have like zone alarm, etc.
Make sure your router and windows firewall are not blocking the program. Turn them off just to check.

anytime you're having a network issue, your go-to troubleshooting method should be to restart router/modem.

that being said, you've probably already tried this and it may or may not have fixed your problem.

Ok I can give you some quick info so we don't waste each others time. First off, I've re-installed it a few times, even did the silly firewall thing which wouldn't actually prevent anything seeing as I was able to play before, I can even go on my laptop on the same network and log in through that on the same account.

Curiously enough this issue started around the same time I had a stupid DNS resolver issue and had to reboot the router, but I put all the settings back to the way they were as I have done this routine many times in the past. I highly doubt the router would be preventing me from logging on, its a generic wireless router my ISP gave me not one of those fancy store bought ones that needs to be configured or bridged.

I did a little searching, and found these threads with similar problems.

So often when having a problem I'm asked: is your (driver / software) updated? I usually roll my eyes but do the update anyway....and the problem gets resolved.

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=217 (First resolution: quicklaunch hotkey ) (Second Resolution: updating the bios for motherboard)

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=56705 (No resolution shown, but very similar to your situation)

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=14330 (lists IP Servers from 2010 – not sure it’s still current)

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=43211 (no resolution shown)

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7102&page=2 (Router Firmware needed to be updated)

http://www.project1999.org/forums/showthread.php?t=82626 (AT&T issue – Note: I have AT& T and I don’t have this issue)

Keep trying, I'm sure you'll figure it out eventually. Be sure to post after you do get it resolved, so we can add to the resolution database that is the forums.

Need more awesome people like you to help out in these threads!! A+ work.

AC, trying to dig a little further and see if we can't get this figured out.

You say EQ stopped working for this PC (and only this pc, your laptop on the same network can connect fine, correct?) "around the time" you had a dns issue - do you mean "around the time" or do you mean at the same time?

Also, did this DNS issue affect both computers, or just the one you are having problems with now?

after your response we will (unfortunately....) get to the real digging. I am doing my best to help, so i apologize if some of this sounds repetitive.

Yes EQ stopped working for just this PC, my laptop has always had access. The DNS issue happened around the time but didn't affect my connection to EQ on this PC it only affected my web browsing, like I was playing EverQuest while this happened and didn't lose my connection but was unable to access web pages.

Because not everyone is as interested in helping people to play as we and the rest of the tech forum regulars are.

AC, i would seriously consider messing with your ports. Open everything within 500 in either direction of the port its trying to access through (its listed in your log)

It sounds very much like you are having a networking issue, and I'm going to keep attacking that until something sticks.

Do you have the latest drivers for *everything*? including your net card? also, are you running wireless or are you wired in? what kind of router/modem/isp do you have?

please list all hardware specs AND currently installed software (please do as best you can) for BOTH computers - the pc and the laptop. Also be sure to list what method they connect to the internet from (wired, wireless), also, do you have static computer IP's or are they randomly configured?

Hope we can get to the bottom of this..

So I would have to put myself on a static IP correct? Hate doing that dynamic seems so much more secure to me, but I'll try. Which ports would those be exactly? I haven't had to forward ports to grant myself a connect before.

Yes I regularly update my drivers and this desktop was built from scratch so I made sure it had the latest drivers and software installed, I can see how that would prevent me from playing a game from another millennium :P ie. DOSBox. Also its a wired connection as a prefer the speed advantage and other obvious benefits.

I am using a two in one router/cable modem; SMCD3GN-RRR.

This is over my head, but it reminded me of something I read while searching his error.

Either your router or one of your ISP's routers is filtering/redirecting packets for 1701/UDP, which is commonly used for L2TP VPNs.

hmmm, it might be your NIC settings. Maybe looking at a packet dump when trying to connect to the servers would help.

Very much over my head too I can't imagine it would require me going that deeply into my network considering I can connect with any other computer in my house. Also I don't know how to do that without looking it up online.

At this point I'm gonna need some good step by step instructions, hoping it doesn't mess up my connection to anything else with anything else. :P

You don't have to go deep into your network just the box that isn't working properly. If other computers going through your router can connect to the server just fine, then it isn't your router. I can't really give you good step by step instructions since I don't really know what the problem is. I suggested looking at your NIC(Network Interface Card) configurations on the problem box and seeing if it lines up with your other boxes' configs. You might have to shift through the registry to find all of them. I would need more info as well so looking at your network traffic(you probably don't want to post it here though) to and from the server could shed some light on the situation. All I really have to go on is:

2013-01-14 18:04:00 Networking: using port [64404].
2013-01-14 18:04:00 Networking: Connection Established [1]
2013-01-14 18:04:00 WorldAuthenticate: Initiating Login.
2013-01-14 18:04:02 Networking: Connection Closed [0] with 0 pending bytes.
2013-01-14 18:04:02 *** ERROR: WorldAuthenticate. My message arrival was NULL, the net has been shutdown.
2013-01-14 18:04:02 *** WorldAuthenticate. Checkpoint 3.

Which tells me you are connecting to the server and then the connection closes 2 seconds later since you didn't receive a response(NULL Response). I have no idea what Checkpoint 3 means, but maybe a dev can shed some light on that. I am honestly just shooting in the dark without your network traffic though. Sorry :(

If other computers going through your router can connect to the server just fine, then it isn't your router.

Unless the router has been setup to have the laptop DMZ or be forwarding the port for the specific network IP that the laptop is using.

Honestly sounds like the router or a firewall issue on the PC. If there's someway you can bypass your router and test that I would. Then you could completely rule out the router as a possible problem. Any other way you could get a connection to the internet to test?

Ac888

My Asus M5A97 R2.0 mobo allows me to overclock it with the click of a button through the BIOS. What had happened was I clicked the High Performance button so that it would slightly tweat with the voltages to overclock my CPU by about 300MHz and RAM by about 150MHz. My CPU can be overclocked to a further extend this is just a well known safe setting that Asus has for the clock boost. I never thought it would affect my ability to connect but the issue happened around the same time I did this and it immediately ended after the BIOs settings were returned to default.

If someone could shed light on this then please do tell, but I don't recommended overclocking your CPU even using manufacturer's settings.

That is very odd indeed, and I can't say for sure why this happened this way, but it does make sense from the standpoint that someone else with your same motherboard updated their driver and fixed a similar issue to what you were experiencing.
