buy a 50p 2h weapon (check wiki prices) and spend the rest on banded armor which is usually 1pp per ac

Silver Swiftblade is the best weapon you can have on a Ranger till level 20. http://wiki.project1999.org/Silver_Swiftblade They run between 100 to 250 plat. You need a good weapon to kill.

Yep, I agree ^ Silver swiftblade is what you need.

Really? I thought that I would want one handed weapons so that when i can dual wield my skills are on par with my level. But ok I'll try to find a Silver Swiftblade for cheap.

Ya, keep your skills maxed, but for actual DPS and not skill-training, put that 2H back on.

Falkun is a wise person. Do what he says. Even after level 20 2 hander is the way to go. But not the Swiftbalde. Too little damage once the damage cap is off at 20. Woodsman Staff is the UBER Ranger weapon but pretty big money. Like 5 to 6k. Plenty of cheap 2 hand Ranger only weapons to be had in the Tunnel.

I would say get hold of 'Natures Wrath' and or 'Swarmcaller', both sell for 100pp to 250pp depending on how lucky you get.. seen both for 100pp before now.
You need to kill stuff fast !
Also get a bow and make some arrows, you can get 25% off mobs hit points on pulling at lower levels with a bit of luck.
Hope it goes well for you, been great fun for me...

Oaks is right. Ranger is a Cat and Mouse character without Uber gear and even then pretty much the same. Best to try to get mobs down to like 60% with your Bow then go in and Melee toe to toe or you will have just WAY too much down time unless you have a Fungi or Ikky BP. They just take too much damage to Melee mobs Solo. And a Ranger can solo pretty well with all their spells. You NEED to solo Hybrids with the 40% XP penality or will take you 2 years to get to level 60.

Ok so everyone is suggesting 2 handers I'm curious what the reason is behind this. Also I have an Argent Defender in the bank of another character, would that be good enough for now and maybe pick up a suit of banded? Or try to sell the Argent Defender and use that cash to pick up one of the above mentioned weapons AND a set of banded?

Well the silver swiftblade is just the best afforable weapon period below 20. Imho after that too, but it starts to decay in the mid 20's compared to other options.

Swarmcaller is a critical purchase after it starts to proc ( it procs a slow at 45 ), and its not a bad weapon even before then.

Using a 2 hander usually produces DPS-per-plat ratio on a par with or better than dual wielding for a lot of your career. It also lets you cast nukes in between swings without losing any melee DPS. Supposedly generates less aggro too, although I'm not sure that works correctly here. If you can get a Woodsmans (31/35) you will be set for weapon DPS until end game.

That said, there are some semi-cheap 1 hand duo's that aren't bad. Jade mace,Lamentation,Wurmy, etc.

Argent Defender is just WAY too slow to use without a killer Haste item which I doubt you have. Pick up one that is in the high 30's very low 40's at the least delay wise.

Silver Swiftblade :). Chances are by level 20 you may not have enough to afford Woodsman's Staff (5-6k). I settled for less with my ranger, til I could afford one, and bought a Springwood Stave, which runs about 500p max.

1-20: Fast 1 or 2hander. Reasoning: You are limited to a damage cap, so you do not want a slow weapon with high dmg, even if it has a good ratio.

20-46ish: Best ratio weps you can find. Either 2h, or 2 1h's. If you are going to duel-wield, to always have the better ratio in the offhand, and/or fastest weapon in the mainhand. As suggested, I believe Woodman's Staff is the best option here. Lammy/Jade Mace+wurmy works ok too. Reasoning: Faster mainhand weapon allows for more double-attack procs. It's been tested that best atk/dmg ratio in the Offhand is better DPS over all.

46+: Fastest weapon you can find for your main hand, and best ratio/epic for your offhand. Reasoning: Lower the dely of the weapon, the better the damage bonus is and like above, more DA procs. You cannot get a damage bonus for the offhand, therefore you want a really fast 1h for your mainhand. Options for MH: Jade mace, Lamentation, Revultant Whip, Lupine Dagger, Fayguard Parrying Dagger. Barbed Scale Whip(until nerf) OH: Best ratio you can find! Wurmslayer until it gets nerfed is prolly BiS, besides epic at the moment.

This was all told to me a while back, when I first started playing my ranger.

Dual Wield is not linked in any way to primary weapon delay. If the offhand weapon delay is complete, you will make a check against your DW skill, if the check passes your offhand will swing, if the check fails you will not swing with your offhand.

You want the fastest weapon in your mainhand to take greatest advantage of bonus damage. You want the best ratio weapon in your offhand because it does not receive bonus damage. If your fastest weapon is also your best DPS weapon, keep it in your mainhand.

Wurmslayer is BiS offhand for levels 20+ until nerfed to primary only. Rangers have lots of options for MH.

Woodsman staff will take you to epics.

Also, keep weapon skills maxed, even if you have to use a cracked staff for a couple swings each level. You'll thank yourself later.

People keep throwing "fastest weapon mainhand", without really seeming to understand the mechanics. Of course you're not going to want to use a rev whip over say a jade mace.

The formula is: (damage x 2 + damage bonus)/delay + ((level + duel wield skill)/500)*(damage x 2)/delay

Well here is an update, I sold the Argent Defender and had enough to buy Silver Swiftblade, and a set of Banded Armor. Also got a Wraith Bone Hammer to keep 1hb skill up, Silverish Scimitar for 1hs and crested mistmoore shield til i can dual wield. Any suggestions on a cheap piercing weapon i can use because when i get high enough id like to do short sword of morin and orc impaler quests. Thanks for all our suggestions to help me out i really appreciate it.

Piercing: http://wiki.project1999.org/Dragon_Horn_Ykesha

Although I think most people just let them rot/vendor them, they are dirt cheap. I'll try to keep you in mind if I end up with one somehow.

Probably the best purchase for the money after weapon would be a pair of 5/55 rings, which will dramatically increase your survivability at lower levels. (Platinum Fire Wedding Ring)

Some other cheap items for rangers roughly in order of pp/effectiveness
Hero Bracers
Tree Weave
Ivy Etched Sleeves (has str!, usually cheap)
Sarnak Hide Mask
Dwarven Work Boots
Iksar Scaled Gloves

etc

A pair of 5/55 rings (Plat Fire Wedding Ring) should be one of your next purchases. They should run 200-250p/each, but you won't replace them for a LONG time.

After that, I'd probably start off with a full set of banded. Then start upgrading pieces as you get additional cash. Ephirith covered most of the cheaper upgrades. If you plan on tanking, focus on AC over STR, otherwise focus STR.

Totally agree on the 5 AC/+55 HP rings...worth every copper...
Will last you a very long time or if you decide to switch to another toon,
-- great little twink items...;)

Hero Bracers should not be too hard to get. Mino Hero is up all the time
in Steamfont. Get help killing him and then do the faction work to finish
the Hero Bracer quest. Often times there's a high-level rogue in Steamfont
waiting for Starfyre to pop who can kill hero for you. My little ranger has the
Shackles, just needs to do the faction work...
