a buddy of mine just joined the server and I have a meger 500pp available to set up his new Paladin char gear-wise, what would be the best "bang-for-my-buck" purchases I could make for this relatively small sum?

Suit of bronze (~110 AC): 100pp
Suit of banded (91 AC): 75pp
Gigantic Zweihander (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=409) (18/39): 200 - 300pp
Crested Mistmoore Shield (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1102): 150 - 200pp
Enameled Black Mace (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=95) (8/28): 150 - 200pp
Obsidian Scimitar (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=275) (7/27): 80 - 100pp
Jagged Band (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1665): ~50pp ea
Moonstone Ring (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1668): ~50pp ea
Golden Amber earrings (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1927) (+3 str): ~50pp ea
4ac 45hp rings (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1656): ~150pp ea (guess)

Obviously that adds up to more than 500 but it should give you some ideas.

+HP and a decent weapon would be the best. A 2 hander would have him sorted for a while.

Thanks for posting, great item list for starting Pally's or SK's even.
Jagged Bank is 50pp!? Dang I paid 125 the other day. Ouch.

Don't forget splitpaw gear...hands, mask and belt. They sell very cheap and have very useful stats for paladins.
I would also recommend Azure sleeves. They have more AC than bronze, weigh less and usually sell for under 50pp.
I would also say that you should avoid the 2 hander for now and focus on a sword and board set up. Until he is high enough to get over the level 10 dmg cap a 2 hander is useless.
Go for a cheap but effective shield like bark shield or chitin shell shield each of which sells for 15-40pp and each of which has more AC than a crested mistmoore shield, but fewer resists.
As far as weapons go...silverish scimitar is good, I like the cold iron morning star as well, but it is a bit slow. You might invest some time and get him a screaming mace. All the while though be sure you are urging him to save up for the all powerful ghoulbane...=)

Also please feel free to see me in game and I will help you out with any more advice I can think of.

Definitely nab him some Split paw hide gloves, some banded, and a 2 handed sword or axe.The weapon is probably your most important thing, but dont spend all your money on it.

Asie from that, +hp gear would be tight.

I'd spend it all on one thing. Save up another 100 and shoot for a ghoulbane. Dumb to spend 500p on a bunch of junk you'll be replacing soon anyway.

I've got a warrior twink i made when i was like level 30... i sort of left him and ended up making another warrior twink so i still have this fully bronzed war twink doing nothing. If I'm on and not busy and you're in WFP, send me a tell.

Also - i agree with people talking about the 2handers. On my new warrior twink i have a yak and a mith 2 hander, i don't use the mith 2 hander due to how rubbish it is in comparison, i hit for 16 with the yak, and only 20 with the mith 2 hander. 1 Handers look the best option.

First order of business should be the fire opal hitpoint rings. It truly is the best bang for your buck. No other items prior to the Planes (or maybe some obscure long ass high level quest) will net you 90-110 extra hit points in classic.

I think this is an excellent option TBH. Both this and the ghoulbane are good choices and both will run you in the 500p range (a bit higher for both TBH, but if you shop you can find them for 500-600). Just whatever you do don't spend it all on a bunch of random junk he'll outgrow in a couple of weeks anyway. Better to spend it on a few pieces he'll use for a long time. Not only that but the resale value on junk is pretty bad whereas if he ever gets bored of his pally and you're trying to sell the ghoulbane again you'll probably find a seller fast and you might even make some profit on it.
