I need your help. I am trying to connect via metro pcs phone tether and im getting 1017d and I think ive narrowed it down to my cell phone being considered an "open proxy" between myself and the internet ...(obviously) but this is causing my 1017 problem. My computer is virus free, my petiton is unanswered and the people that metro pcs source out to overseas had no idea what an open proxy even was so im at a dead end and wanted to reach out in the general community in hopes of someone with a similar problem found a workaround.

Prior to this post and my petition on these fourms I did search every 1017 related thread as well as posted in the technical support forum but those have not lead me to a resolution.

Please help!!

You could start by telling us what OS the phone is running and what app you are tethering with?

The phone is android (galaxy s3...) and I am tethering via an option in settings to "turn tethering on".

Sorry if I miss specific details but ask like Muzyn and I'll gladly fill in some blanks.

I have attempted your suggestion...eagerly at that but with that being said, it did not work. I am about to copy my EQ folder onto a flash drive...re-install EQ here as well as dropping it on another desktop to see if I can load from another PC and / or a fresh install. I am trying to remain skeptical (but hopeful?).

I've just marked off a clean install as a possible fix to my problem and unfortunately...it did not succeed. Still hitting a brick wall with 1017...

HALP

I tried asking you in your tech support thread if you'd attempted to run EQ using the tether on another PC, or if you'd tried running EQ on your current PC using a standard internet connection (not tethered). This will help to narrow down the problem, giving us insight into whether or not the problem is with your PC, the tethering, or what.

I rarely make suggestions in the tech boards without reason - and if i'm taking shots in the dark, I'll say so. Please give this a shot and let us know the results in your tech board thread. thanks!

I suggest waiting for your IP Exemption. Tethering is like, borderline shady. Because why else would you need one when it only takes a few days to get an IP Exemption now? I wish they could find a way to prevent tethering completely.

He could be a hipster playing in Starbucks 10 metres from where he lives nursing an expensive coffee...

But yeah, shady shit really - probably "boxer's choice" for getting around IP exemptions :/

My guildie uses his phone because it is his only source of internet.

Can't speak for the US but in the UK a wireless data service is way more expensive than some home internets...and tethering is under lock and key here, pay big monies or no dice.

Tethering is shady now? I do not have wireless in my place, so if I want to take my laptop and play from my couch or from my bedroom, I have to use my phone to connect to the internet.

paying for mobile hot spot is stupid, I have a HP Pre3 and use freeTether on my unlimited verizon data plan. Its great if the home internet goes down etc etc or I am out...or need to raid in the car!

I would suggest looking up an android app rather than use the built in tethering options that are usually blocked etc from the carrier so you can 'pay' them for the ability to use your phone as a hotspot...when it can and should just be able to do it by itself.

My Tmobile G2 has a built in Hotspot feature. seems to work better then actually tethering the phone to the laptop when i travel.

I asked him about cost. Said he is on a family plan and has unlimited data - Sprint. He told me the amount he pays for his phone, but I don't remember at the moment. It wasn't outrageous though. I imagine he is on his parent's plan, and he is only paying for the additional phone and data pack charge.

Download foxfi from android market. Your phone willnt allow you too but there are ways round that. I use my phone as wifi hotspot while playing cause it is dumb to pay an extra $50 for internet when my phone has it. And dont worry about if you have unlimited data or not. Foxfi alllows you to put your phone under a proxy which hides it from your carrier(I have att). I have my phone, wifes as hot spot and never been caught( eq, bay pirate and so on)

Lol @ pricks automatically assuming the worst about someone.

Anyway, I use foxfi to tether my phone to laptop throught bluetooth. It works ok for web browsing and eq (usually runs fine lil higher than normal ping though). When you can't acceas wifi or home intwrnet tethering seems to be a reliable option.

My biggest concern was that I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan which would likely be terminated if verizon found out I was tethering without paying their 40 to 50 dollar monthly fee for 2 gb of data. Is there a way to avoid this? Can they tell I'm tetherinh to begin with? Like if I use youtube on laptop that's tethered to cell phone will verizon be able to tell the difference between that and my cellphone using youtube?

I've used foxfi and pdanet a few times while at work to play eq.
Both worked well and I didn't reciever any warnings or notices from verizon, although eq is very data conservative. It comes out to less than 100 mb of data per hour played. So...should I even risk verizon finding out? Or should I play it safe and suffer through no eq while at work?

yeah iv been waiting like a week and a half and i have got no reply yet and keep bumping post.

I was doing the same thing as you mate, playing off my Iphones wireless network and pining over 1k-3k ms/ping. Its not worth it. it sucks to play with and you can fix it. But i do suggest, like Slave said, wait for the ip exemption which is the same thing i am doing right now also.

I live out in the woods and do have satellite Internet however it will NOT work with most gaming applications because the latency is over 1100ms on average. I have an iPhone 4s and tether it. I only use my phone as a tether for eq and my monthly usage playing all the time is under 2gb.

As to your open proxy problem, I'm not sure. If not already suggested, If your pc is portable and wifi capable, take it to an Internet wifi hotspot and connect, test. also have a look at your LAN settings under Internet options.

i remember tethering having some crappy pings even when download/upload speeds are dope -.-"

Update:

I have now eliminated two possibilities:

Fresh install of the EQ client on old rig...unsuccessful & I have now done a fresh install on a completely different rig and my problem persists. I am rejected by world when attempting to authenticate. My issue is now narrowed down to MetroPCS tether / hotspot.

I am at a dead end here. The rig I have been gaming on since playing on P99 has never had any issues either directly connected from modem to PC or wireless. I cannot connect to P99 via USB tether from my MetroPCS phone. I am paying extra monthly for the ability to do so legitimately for the sole purpose of playing on P99 where I am located (very remote).

I believe the problem is that I have an open proxy (my phone between MetroPCS internet and my PC...obviously) and the server staff must have a setting that does not allow open proxy connections. With that being said, other people on P99 are playing via a tether so what makes their case different from mine? Does anyone know of a way to circumvent this? I have no intentions to dual box or break any server rules ... I simply want to play Everquest and am at my wits end with this.

I have IP exemptions on both of my accounts from where I previously lived (with my brother ... Infuriati) so that I could play my Shaman or Warrior when he was on his Monk. I hope there is a type of exemption in the realm of open proxy connections like mine (which I imagine is rare?).

Anyhow...I am going to keep digging. Any further tips or information provided by you all is very much appreciated...and I thank you.

I'm by no means attempting a witch hunt here, haters keep hating but I'm just joining some dots:-

Many of you know me on my main, Infuriati. A lot also know my wife plays (barely), so we can enjoy gaming together. But today while in oasis someone accused us of boxing, and petitioned. Thats fine because we have absolutely nothing to hide. But after being petitioned the gm claims to have seen her autofollowing me, and simultaneous casting...which is an absolute lie.Now again, I'm not worried about it because after their investigation they will realize everything is good, but I just wanted to give all those who enjoy gaming with their partners a heads up. Hope everyone enjoys their weekend!

Morterapido and Morterapida

Any link between IP exemptions causing both "pairs" problems here? Have the GMs banned Infuriati based on some issue with what's going on with Netherzul?

Is/was Netherzul trying to attempt a trio with Infuriati and his wife?

No I'm not banned, I can log on all my accounts. My brother and I lived together about 2 months ago in FL, and we needed the IP exemptions. Now I live in TX working on Ft Bliss. Swish you're doing great detective work, but no.

Swish, although I appreciate your skepticism, it really is unnecessary in this case. People are banned on a daily basis on P99 for dual boxing and those people try to keep their actions veiled. Why would I bring my account(s) into such a public spotlight with the notion of dual boxing? I linked directly to my tech support post and I also have a post under the petition forum with both of my ip exempt account names.

Common sense and logic go hand in hand. Can we utilize that a little please prior to pointing fingers, even if your intent isn't directly malicious? Thanks much.

I'd also like to add that Foxfi failed to connect me to the P99 server. I am fully capable of connecting to any other EQ EMU server, Diablo 3, WoW, Uthgard DAoC EMU, Asherons Call EMU, SWG EMU & various online free to play MMOs. My one and only problem is playing on P99 (which is what I am only interested in playing).

I have also tried connecting via bluetooth from my device outside of a direct tether / standard wi-fi hotspot and still no dice.

With all of that being said I can only imagine it's a specific setting that the P99 staff has enabled that is preventing me from playing. Hopefully there is an exemption for someone in my position but only time will tell.

As I say, I'm not trying to witch hunt... but is there an issue of 1 of those accounts having an IP exemption and being played from both locations where there's another IP exemption? I dunno if that's flagged something up and causes you guys some problems?

Netherzul

I've considered what you said also. I'm to the point of asking the server staff remove my IP exemptions and see if that fixes my problem. If you're IP exempt they may block you from connecting via a tether or though internet provided by your phone. My brother doesn't play either of my accounts and we're about 1500 miles away from one another now but again, the exemptions might have, like you said, flagged something on my accounts.

I'll add that to my post in the petition forums. Thanks Swish.
