Hi, new player here with a question.

I've just started leveling my Iskar Necro and based on some advice I got I've been leveling off spiderlings/spiders and saving the silk to sale when I eventually make it down to EC.

My question is, I understand the value of this silk is it's used for tailoring, but I'm just wondering, would it be beneficial for me to use it to skill up tailoring for myself instead of selling? What are the long term benefits of it and would I eventually see a return on my investment?

You can get some return on tailoring with making things like bearskin medicine bags and such. But the hurdle to get there is long you need to be 68 for trivial which means you will go through a lot of other things to get there. If you're looking to get to that point eventually, save them. But if you are brand new to the server I think your better off selling them and leveling that skill later when plat is easier to get.

You'll have to burn through money before you get to the money-making part, as Enr4ged stated. I'd advise you to sell them and use the money for spells and some starting gear, unless you're sure you can make enough money to do that while investing in tailoring at the same time :)

Sell. Tailoring will just break your heart.

There is a practical limit on how many people on the server can be active in selling backpacks to make money. I'm not sure how many people that is, but I'm a tailor that is selfish. Stay out of tailoring town!

Back on live when you had to dig hard to find what the recipes were, there was money in tradeskills. I remember hand made backpacks standard at 100p per in 2000 on Tarew Marr. Now that the information is trivial, there is only money when new recipes are released, and the sales are snapped up by people camping the patch to be the first to sell. Pretty much tradeskills are a losing proposition, especially when you break it all down to plat per hour from skill level 20 compared to adventuring. They are a rich character's hobby. That being said, I do all the tradeskills, but the money is really in adventuring.

the value of silk will triple when velious comes out bc of coldain shawl. Put it on a alt save it ...keep saving it, one day you will be rich

The silk is only valuable for maxing tailoring, making wu armor. There is a stopgap for maybe 10-20 skill ups on silver thread crystalline silk. Personally I'm sitting on 600 silk swatches just waiting on that to come back. I imagine nobody will need more than that to max out. Also as I have heard, FoB is loaded with silk, and wouldn't be particularly hard for anyone to get what they need there. You would probably be better to max out tailoring than to wait to be rich of selling spider silks.
