View Full Version : Dealing with Unjust Petition Threats?

I've enjoyed my experience on the server so far except for a few unfortunate incidents. In both of these incidents, players threatened to petition without justification.

My question here are

1.) How do you protect yourself against unjust and groundless petitions by scumbag players?

2.) What could be the consequence of a successful petition against you - even if it is unjustly levied?

--------------------------------------------------------------

Experience 1:

While camping raster in lower Guk i noticed the PH seems to have missed a cycle...Odd...

I wait for the next cycle and see that as soon as the PH popped a monk, who was hiding around the corner, snipes the PH.

I tell that monk that I've been camping raster for 2 hours but he threatens to petition me because i am trying to kill-steal him! Insitting that he had been camping the PH for 2 cycles...the very two cycles that my PH had gone missing...

I tell him he is a fool and that i ahve logs to prove that I am there - but actually i didn't bc my log was not turned on...

--------------------------------------------------------------

Experience 2

Camping a named Gnoll in southern karana, Grisolk, i kill the PH exactly at the spawn spot -5600, 150 at 25 minute intervals.

3 to 4 such intervals pass, i check my screen and the named is up - so i kill him.

Immediately some druid claims i stole his kill because he got first hit. I'm like dooooode! Who cares if you got first hit - i've been camping this guy!!

This guy also threatens to petition.

Again, i'm just stunned at the gall of some people who feel that they can use /petition to their malevolent advantage

--------------------------------------------------------

how many people here have had peittions unjustly put against them?

what do you do to prevent it from happening? Do i have to keep compelte logs of my entire game??? all the time???

do guides even check logs you submit? how to submit logs - by email or ingame?

just tired of these douches

If someone threatens to petition but has no good cause to do so, ignore them. The guides have access to logs when they need them, but they also listen to explanations if they show up to investigate something. If you're not doing anything wrong, then 99% of the time there's no cause for concern.

People are just dumb.

You don't/can't. You play following the rules to the best of your ability and let them petition. From my experiences, the GMs are unbiased and will make the decision they feel is fair.

To protect yourself from camp snipers though, /log on, take screenshots with timestamps of you at camp, possibly add some /who to show who is in zone. But if you are at a camp, have been there longer, and are keeping it clear, these threats are likely just threats.

It sucks you've had these bad experiences, hopefully your future interactions are more pleasant.

I find this to be the best solution.

Just be careful. You are always guilty until proven innocent its like a third world country.

ignore it, there will always be people that try to bully you out of your camp with threats of petition and straight up lying to convince you that you're in the wrong and ksing him.

just remember to ignore all these slicked tongue bullies and if you have any questions just petition in game and continue doing what your doing, and make sure to turn your log on =p

I guess logs dont really matter here since weve already discoverd they can be forged

On a serious note, the douchebaggery has only gotten worse as time has gone by in my experience. You can put it down to people caving in too often, logging off mad and not petitioning, or there being no real way to solve the issue.

Obviously we all remember the days on Live where if you see a guy looking at an empty spawn you know he's camping it and respect that...move on. This isn't live, and if people can bend rules to get a few pixels they're going to do it and try to lawyer themselves up as best as possible, while probably having had their camps taken away with the same tactics previously.

The monk/Lower Guk instance...I'd say if he's hiding around a corner he isn't camping it, and has been intentionally deceptive knowing someone else is there. GM's call I suppose.

Overall you can play nice, or you can be a cancerous piece of shit and try and get ahead with throwing the "P99 book of camping" at the guy who was there first.

Peace and love.

People are quick to petition every single thing that happens. Sometimes its unwarranted, other times it has to do with simple errors of not seeing the person camping something, and very few are valid claims.

When petitions are received for camp stealing, the first thing we do is try to get the players to resolve the issue by themselves. If this is not likely, we step in and try our best to come up with the best / fairest solution for both parties. In a lot of cases, the actual petitioner is found to be at fault.

This right here....

Don't do it. You won't get banned for a first offense if you steal a camp, but training someone else will more then likely get you the proverbial boot in the arse.

If you have problems with a player that can not be resolved, then use petition and let us help. Don't try to resolve the issue with a train or killstealing, etc. As far as being petitioned by people when not deserving it, there is not much that can be done about it. petitioners gunna petition. Stick to the rules and all will turn out well.

I think its interpretations of the rules that cause a lot of the problems. That and people making up bullshit that worked for them once before to coerce someone off whatever they were camping:-

"Oh dude, you weren't sitting right on top of the spawn...so you weren't technically camping it and therefore its mine"

...that's a favourite of some people, look out for those comedians ;)

just a good rule of thumb to never listen to anyone who starts quoting the rules, chances are theyre twisting it one way or another

^ is that Fred Durst

Also if I was a guide and someone kept bothering me with constant petitions about ridiculous/false claims I wouldn't take anything they said after that as serious. People overuse petitions way too much wasting peoples time.

Either petition and look like a noob, or be a man.

i have never understood the snitch outcast mentality... it's not bad to let those in power know that someone else is doing something bad..

why do i petition most often? because people are truly breaking the rules and behaving bad.... also, because alot of people are scared of reporting, taking the confrontations...

but someone has to do it, and i do it gladly... but i don't petition over small things.. people have to be really rude to do it...
