Ward also revealed that a major inspiration for the series is the fantasy, role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons. Before the series aired, many of the writers were avid fans of the game. However, because of the busy schedule that comes with writing and coordinating a television series, they no longer had time to actively play the game. Ward explained that, because the writers were too busy, they would attempt to write stories that they would "want to be playing D&D with."
