I hate wearing headsets as well but It feels like you are wearing nothing when you are using them. Plus you can detach the microphone when you aren't using it. Best 60 bucks I ever spent.

and as far as using a desktop mic, listen to when people finish speaking and then speak. no feedback, pretty crazy trick I know. I hear that technique could also help a person seem like less of an annoying moron as well

I have these laying around that I used to use for movies/music so I'm going to give them a shot with the modmic. Not meant for gaming so hopefully they aren't too noisy for the mic.
