settled on paladin (not worried about the XP penalty). started in freeport
Im so lost. There is no one to hold my hand, no ant trail to follow, no minimap with dots and markers to tell me who to talk to. I have taken to talking to every NPC i come across to see if they might have a job for me. no luck thus far. I have been saving my practices from leveling and only spending (frugally) the points on what is currently relevant. I have gotten lost several times in freeport, but i have discovered new areas in the process. areas that have been beneficial.
I have learned to pick my fights carefully. You character is not godmode as in current mmos. And have died many times due to careless mistakes. But with each death, i have learned something new.
The game so far is frustrating, but 12/13 years ago, half a million people were thinking the same thing.

The biggest piece of advice I can give you as a newb, is to keep the Project 1999 wiki open to alt tab to for reference.
Dont worry about "questing", despite the name "Everquest" there arent very many quests to go on compared to modern MMOs like WoW, Rift, ect. Theres no only very few "Go collect 10 bear asses and return them to me" things, or just quests in general. Worry more about chatting up people, killing monsters, and making friends.
Dont be afraid to tell groups your a newb, most of them will spam your chatbox as soon as they find out with tips, hints ect, youll probably get a few handouts as well, but dont expect or ask of it of course
Good luck. The game has real charm to it. Good choice on Paladin too, great newb class IMO.
