I play a Iksar SK.. so its tough being hated by everything, plus 68% exp penalty, plus I don't get slam and insane Sta/Str as Ogres/Trolls..
I chose a rough route, so all I'm saying is prepare yosalf.

Your asking someone to give you 4 to 5k of gear or more. If that is not begging what the hell else is. And you won't make it past level 20 on it.

Are there any perks to playing a Paladin, or just negatives? Are they decent tanks?

That depends what you are tanking. Group content: you want a hybrid (PAL/SHD), because they can snap aggro so your DPS are not getting hit and can lay into a mob ASAP. Raid targets, you want a warrior so he can use Defensive discipline. For the leveling game, hybrids make better tanks than warriors, for the end-game, warriors are bar-none the best tank simply due to Defensive.
