Gemstone IV. If it had a higher population, i'd still be there. Awesome combat system, very unique classes.

Arcticmud http://mud.arctic.org/ was my favorite. Krynn based.

MUD loosely equals multi user dungeon and were/are the text only precursors to EQ wow, etc. Super good times circa 1990, or if your baud is shit.

eq was built from the ground up or whatever but it's really similar to playing a DikuMUD actually.... with obvious differences, but the typing commands are really similar

anyways, http://mdhoria.net/

I always viewed EQ and WoW as shells on a MUD.

EQ, most definitively yes. From the nature of rare drops from rare mobs to the typing in stuff for quests. Hell, even the way warriors played in some MUDs was reflected in classic EQ in that they had pretty much two abilities to use in combat, a fighting move (kick/bash in EQ) and Rescue (taunt in EQ).

WoW, not so much. From guaranteed named mobs to guaranteed drops. Also combat was much more interactive for all classes. Which is why I guess few people used to chat, since you always had something to press or click.

That's one of the things I like about EQ over WoW. You have that time between abilities to type out your chat.

I didn't mind being in Vent with guildies or RL friends in WoW, but I'm not joining random voice chat for PUGs with people I know nothing about. In those instances, I like typing, but when you have a button to press every 1.5sec, you don't have time to type.

Unless your a bard, then you still don't have time to type in EQ.
