Unfortunately, that is how everyone else got it.
EQ is free to play, they don't charge for the up to date client, so don't stress about getting and older client this way.

We all bought it at the time; you had to back then. If it was a modern digital download that got lost/deleted, we could just download it again. It's a much different thing than downloading, say, a movie, but I'm not a lawyer. /shrug.
