Not very expensive to run a country that sparsely populated. Nowhere near the infrastructure costs.
Plus, the debt thing is really not a simple thing at all. Hell, 1/3 of the debt is what the government owes to itself for borrowing against social security and shit. Other countries invest in our currency to stabilize their currency value against ours. Without debt, there are no bonds to buy and do that with. And most importantly, increasing debt actually boosts the economy in the short term and we're still recovering from a recession.
Frankly, the US carries so much debt because it can and nobody will do jack shit about it. We run the world bro.
