Their plan is to send everyone at or near the bottom into abject poverty, then they believe they can finally install the impetus to corrode the system upward gaining momentum as they convert evermore of the population into abject poverty in bottom-up squallor.

Consequently, the backlash is that as everyone's accomplishment is being eroded into abject poverty, they're actually building an increasing pool of people resentful for dragging them down into the muck with the Taco Bell lifers.

There is actually a very strong argument to be made for the idea that many (most?) people lack the tools to perform well in modern society as dwarfdude pointed out. The solution on the right is to allow those individuals to fail and suffer the indifference of reality. The solution on the left is to make performance compulsory under penalty of death. The intermediate state on the left is routed through social libertarianism with social welfare underwriting by the state and foreign investment subsidizing struggling individuals. Works fine until the external resource pool becomes exhausted or otherwise inaccessible.
