Too many independents on the right know who he is now and think his name is synonymous with cuck or communist. He had a window but the DNC shut it for him.

Also he is on record for saying the GOP politicians accused of sex harrasment should resign, but defending Frakin and saying we shouldnt worry about the past as far as bill goes.

So hes digging himself into a hole that would get him shamed hard in a fight with trump in a way that trump voters would be energized from. Just not possible anymore.
