If I had to guess I would say prosecutors spoke to the press because they think the public should know more, and so they say as much as they think they can get away with without ending up in trouble themselves. Maybe that's because they aren't happy that Trump gets to proclaim victory while they're forced to remain silent. Maybe they think that even though they failed to convict Trump by law, they report they wrote tells a story persuasive enough to convict him in the court of popular opinion.
