Faster liquid consumption in the desert...?

While reading Stormlord's "Do you remember:" thread, am I remembering correctly or am I delusional, but I thought the early version of the game had the desert zones of North Ro, Oasis, and South Ro have the player consume liquids at a faster rate - perhaps twice as fast as they normally would? I remember when I first adventured out there (so far away from Freeport), that I stocked up on even amounts of drink and food. Eventually I would be thirsty while still retaining food and other players mentioned that was the effects of the zone on players. Thus why Desert Madmen and Madmen carried supplies of water - they were so delirious in thirst that they forget they had drink!

I could be wrong, though.

Thanks!

That sounds cool, but I don't remember it at all and suspect it came later. Verant didn't even add support for food/drink having different durations based on type until the end of the classic era (AFAIK P99 still hasn't implemented them yet).

Therefore, I'm skeptical that they implemented zone-based duration differences any earlier ... but like I said that sounds cool (not just for deserts but also for places like Skyfire Mountains), so I hope that I'm wrong ... or if I'm not, I hope they one day implement it as a custom feature.

Was prolly just a rumor started because that's how it works in D&D.

This isn't still a thing?

I know it existed at launch, I KNOW that much. I was still under the impression it worked now, I spend a lot of time in Oasis and my water definitely goes faster than my food when I'm out there.

I also remember this from live and i remember it being close to or exactly 2x consumption of drink.

I haven't experienced an increased consumption of drink in deserts on p99.

Are you a class with forage? Do you eat or drop every piece of food you forage?

Can't forage.

Maybe its in my head now, but I know for a fact it existed on Live during launch (causes thats really the only time I played EQ on live).

I think we should bring it back.

Could be some merit to this..

Thread titled 'Nerfing! Nerfing! Who's up for a good nerfing! You know you want it!' in the alt.games.everquest newsgroup. Should mention someone started saying this is an urban legend in the thread, and others came to disprove it. I'll post both people's opinions and you can decide. Thread is also November 2002 and no one mentions exact time frame this happened. Interestingly enough they mention higher consumption rates when encumbered. Here's the thread quotes:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!to...4Qps%5B1-25%5D

Quote:

Water is consumed much faster in NRo and Oasis than normal. That I've
observed far too often to even be bothered by your ignorant jab. I
suspect SRo also consumes water faster, but I've never spent more than
a few minutes at a time there, so I can't say for sure. But most of my
characters have started in Freeport. Most of them have moved into NRo
early in their careers, eating and drinking the same food/drink. Every
single one of them has had their water (or milk) consumed about 50%
faster in those particular desert zones.
Quote:

I spent a long time in the NRo area myself way back when, and didn't
notice any faster consumption of food or water.

I classify the whole thing as a myth.
Quote:

I've noticed that, in Oasis, water is consumed WAY faster than
normal.
Quote:

100% guaranteed you go through water faster than normally there and in
the two Ros.
Quote:

I know that water and rations are normally consumed at the same rate
by my human. I know that after a couple hours in Oasis I hate fewer
water flasks left than rations when I went in with the exact same
number of both.
Quote:

If you did not sit down and actually time it, then you don't know that.
That goes for the rest of your "observations".

A potential problem is, as is mentioned in the thread, if you right click then your food/water that is 'in your belly' lasts half as long as if you rationed it naturally (without right clicking). Could be people loaded up on water at the vendor and right clicked, and just noticed the higher consumption rate.

Who knows for sure, will try and dig up more stuff.

Found an in era post (Late June of 2000), should be noted he is comparing Muffins consumption alongside Water consumption, however I believe this is before Muffins had a different food consumption classification (i.e. a 'snack'). Even mentions Iron Rations are consumed same rate as Water.

Thread is titled 'Muffins' in alt.games.everquest newsgroup, here is the link and relevant quotes:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!se...M/7rtVwbNpDh0J

Quote:

False. In most zones you will use up food and water at the same rate
regardless of what food type it is. You buy 20 muffins and 20 water and you
will usually find that you run out of both at the same time. Or you could
buy 20 iron rations and 20 water and see the same thing. One exception is
oasis where water runs out quicker than food.
Quote:

not just oasis, but south ro too (and probably north ro)
Quote:

True. Any of the desert zones make you go through water
twice as fast as food. I used to routinely buy food and water in
lots of 10 and by the time I ran out of water in the desert
zones, I always had five food left.
Quote:

Please add Lavastorm to the zones that use up water or milk faster than
other zones. I only just noticed this today, actually. Makes sense,
it's pretty hot there.

Has anyone ever noticed a zone that used up food faster than normal?

With some experimentation, I found the following things apply in normal,
non-desert zones:

Rations and water get used up at the same rate.
Rations and milk get used up at the same rate.
Milk and muffins get used up at the same rate.
Final quote mentions this did not happen in Lavastorm and appears as if he confirmed the above quotes by noticing higher water consumption in the classic desert zones.

Grrrr keep finding more evidence. Last one it looks like. Thread titled 'What food to eat?'. Is from August of 1999.
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!se...w/Sd6v5azMZxoJ

Quote:

here's a question about this question (below): Do muffins last as long as
the fish? I know that milk is half the price of water, but I've noticed i
run through it about twice as fast, so there really is no gain in the
savings.
Quote:

Where have you been hunting? If in NRo, Oasis, or SRo where it's hot, you
will be going through a lot of water (or milk).
Quote:

I'm pretty sure that all food and water have exactly the same duration,
except that you go through drink twice as fast as food in the desert.
Perhaps you were carrying milk when you were in the desert.
Quote:

The only difference is weight. As I am playing a monk I try to get the
lightest possible food and drink which is also the cheapest! Muffins and
milk. If you are in a dessert you will go through your drink faster than
anywhere else.
Seems pretty legit. I'll search bug forums for any old posts on it, and if no evidence or thread will link this one. Thanks for bringing the idea up!
