IP whitelisting?
 

Is there any reason the server admin couldn't set up a rule that blocks packets from all IP addresses except those that are whitelisted on whatever router/gateway appliance is being used?

Of course, each individual user would have to submit their IP address to the admins, and it might be a bit labor intensive, but that might be one way to get around these ridiculous DDoS attacks perhaps?

not everyone is on a static IP

Not too hard to set up a static IP from a router, but I would fear for the effect on the server's population, people who play in internet cafes etc :p

It's not just people in internet cafes. Most people on the Net have dynamic IPs.

... also, with a ddos, it doesn't necessarily matter if the packets are welcome or not.

That's not how it works.


Imagine a door to your house and 500 black guys are standing in front of it. The white guys can't even get close to the door let alone getting in.

the IP could be white listed by the login server when you login.... requiring you to be in game to keep the ip active to talk to the server.

I would just think it meant my sister was home from college.
