Right, because I have not played EQ for a decade and a half, and this isn't my ninth alt here on 1999, Grimjaw. Clearly I'm not classic material, given all that. It's not that stupid bugs are killing me, it's that I can't hack classic.
Anyway, after returning AGAIN on my second CR, I was successful, but then killed a few minutes later when I became stuck between a bridge and wall in the Qeynos Aquaducts, with a giant rat beating on me. I died a third time - the second due to a bug, after only a couple minutes with my gear again.
I have no problem dying due to my own stupidity, Grimjaw, and I can handle dying because the original devs thought I should learn via death about a false floor (hahaha! Yeah, that was never funny in a location frequently by new toons). That only mildly pisses me off. What I DO find difficult to deal with is running back - taking a good half an hour - only to immediately die due to a moronic bug - true classic or not, it's just plain bad - and then, to die a THIRD time minutes after another half hour run back on CR, due to yet another freaking bug - this time being caught on scenery while a mob beats the shit out of me.
I enjoy classic EQ. I like difficulty - the fear of significant setback adds an edge to death that makes trying to stay alive and avoiding death a real buzz, and achievements in the face of that all the sweeter - unlike virtually every modern MMO excepting Eve Online, of course.
What I do not like is dying for purely bullshit reasons, and frankly I could care less if that's true classic (I don't recall if flying fish really were present way back, but hey - maybe they were. I never spent much time fighting water mobs - I never liked the way swimming works in EQ). I didn't like dying due to getting trapped in scenery while in a fight a decade and a half ago (that I DO recall), and I sure as hell don't enjoy it nowadays. It adds nothing to the game, unless you call swearing at the stupidity and pointlessness of a death a classic experience worth having. I don't.
Death should happen because _I_ failed. Not because the game failed. True classic or not, my vote - for whatever that's worth - is to also fix classic bugs. Bugs mind you. Not remove difficulty that ought to be there. But situations where the game fails in buggy fashion.
