Virgin Monk

Hi! I've never played a melee class ever. It's always a been dress wearin' finger wigglin' mana user. Anyway, I decided to roll a monk, and I'm having a lot of fun! I just run up and punch them in the face!
At level 10 I got Tiger Claw and it's on the same cool down as Kick and Round Kick. Is there ever a situation where I would use Round Kick over Tiger Claw?
And.. is that it for monk abilities? Just those attacks I get from the trainer as I level?... no magic scroll of monkness I have to get? Thanks!

I've been told to always use the newer skill

I've always just used the newest one I had available. Perhaps if you somehow wanted to change up your disciplines but really it doesn't matter. I used the newest one available until flying kick but you can use whatever you want!

Any monk questions/concerns feel free to PM me in game! I may not always have the answer but I can at least tell you what I've done!

To piggy back onto OP's thread, I created a monk and intend to tank for my group. I noticed that monks don't get a 'taunt' ability but someone in the EC tunnel said that monks can still tank because they have high DPS.

How viable will my monk be at tanking if we are grouped down in a dungeon? I know that adds will happen and there may be some messy pulls, how well can my monk maintain or pull aggro off of healers and such?

Thanks for any tips.

p.s. I'm only level 4 right now so I'm sure I'll naturally learn a lot as I level.

Monks are not tanks ^^ They are durable, but have no means of generating aggro other than their dps and proccing weapons. They are essentially like higher damage less durable warriors with no taunt for the purpose of tanking and will never fill that role in a raid situation.

At lower levels you will need someone to root mobs for aggro management unless you hold a significant gear edge over the rest of your party. The same is true for warriors at those levels though ^^

Monks typically end up tanking only when the tank leaves and the group cannot find a replacement or it is a small group duo/trio. It works in certain situations (and works well in those), but is more of an exception than a rule ^^

I depends on the monk's gear really. I have been in Sol A in my early 30's and MM/Lguk in my mid-30's and monks have tanked no problem. They had very good weapons though. the taunt ability isn't going to makeup for a poorly geared warrior anyway. Knights obviously can gain and keep agro much better but a monk can tank if needed.

I have some friends that are coming back and we made the following characters:

Monk: Tank
Rogue: DPS
Chanter: CC
Shaman: Heals/Debuffs etc
Druid: Heals/Nukes etc

We don't have a 6th person yet to round out our group, but how do you think that group makeup will fare down in the dungeons that we hope to fight in?

Would I have issues with the rogue pulling aggro off of me? I guess, like you guys have said, it depends on gear and weapons.

All of those will be able to pull agro off of you in the right situation and depending on your gear/their gear.

Anytime that shaman slows he's going to gain agro, anytime the chanter mez's he'll have agro until you can pull it off of him. you might be better off having the shaman tank until 20+, he'll be able to hold agro better than anyone else and can take damage fairly well. Slow, Blind, beat on mob until dead, nobody will take agro off of him.

Adding a tank to the group isn't going to change things much until higher levels anyways, that group will probably be just fine up until 40+ agro's going to bounce around a bit but with two healers it shouldn't wreck anyone.

I have a monk and I've grouped with shaman and bards around level 20. He has pretty good gear but not twinked out. Anytime they slowed they would gain agro, it would take me about 25% of the mobs life to gain it back and that's if they didn't do anything else to the mob.

I made it to level 15! Double Attack! I'm really staring to kick ass now!

It's fun! They give you a sow and say, "get too it Skippy!" Use that 6th slot to pick up a real tank, then you can chain pull!!
