This quest is pushing me to the edge...

best to camp step 2 first, gathering hearts between respawn

I already have step 2...the rancorous ghasts just dont spawn, or only 1-2 spawn at a time and rarely drop hearts.

Not a single...f*cking...rancorous ghast this past night cycle............................................. .................................................. .................................................. .................................................. ..........................

This quest is just wretched. The ghasts drove me crazy on my druid when I decided to quest it after tracking nerf. Necklace 1 and 2 are miserable. 3 is mercifully easy. Just keep at it... On the bright side (well if you're a druid) you can just port over any time you notice it's dark out. Work on it over time instead of having to do it all right now is a great way to keep your sanity.

ghasts only spawn at night, but kill the other roaming undead for more chances

Best to be or have a tracker. And it can take a while. Clear all the place holders as best you can. I've seen placeholders despawn then a moment later a ghast pops, but that's the slow way. KILL EM ALL!!

But yeah, you might get one heart a night cycle, which seems normal. Might...
Oh and the static ones are not place holders, only the mobile ones.

This quest was really horrid for me also. Honestly getting the dude to spawn on the altar took an extremely long time for me and took way longer than the ghasts. Quest really pissed me off.
