That's 'Average Item Level'. The GearScore add-on is still retarded and awful with arbitrary numbers. The one built into WoW just averages the item level of all of your gear. Unfortunately, the one built in adds in stuff in your inventory, even if you can't wear it.

Example: You're a Druid 3 points short of being able to queue for Heroics. Plate head piece drops that is higher level thanyours, you loot it. Boom, you're in Heroics.

The system Blizzard came up with is really flawed. Well, all of them are except for one I've seen whose name I can't remember. It actually accounted for class-specific BiS, gems, enchantments, etc.
