The servers are currently down for maintenance. The expected uptime is between 5 and 6 PM EST, but I reserve the right to extend this if necessary.

From a technical stand point, what does 'servers down for maintenance' actually mean?

Like do they need dusting or what? I'd love to know what this oft read phrase actually means!
