ATTN: Wiki *Server* Admins (Image File Corruption)

Lotxi recently alerted me to a problem on the wiki, which could potentially be very serious, and since I still am not sure who I should PM about this sort of thing I figured I'd do my normal "cry for help" here in the forum.

The problem is that a significant number of images are still technically there, but 95% of their content (all but the top-most part) is gone. There is however no edit history on them, so it's not that someone uploaded a bad version, it's that the file on the server got corrupted somehow. For instance:

https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_xygoz.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_leanon_ruksey.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_banker_tintal.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Np...llen_iksar.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Np...ixsa_zexus.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Np...i_burrower.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_a_rattlesnake.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_leanon_ruksey.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Np...aw_lookout.png
https://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc_a_ratling.png

The only commonality is that they all start with "Npc_" (but then again, so do most of the images in the wiki) and they are all PNGs. That last part makes me wonder if this might be some sort of image-compression-gone-awry problem. It also could be something else like a HD failure, but since it only seems to affect images (and seemingly not JPGs) I doubt it.

I consider this "very serious" because I'm not aware that the wiki has any image backups, so my fear is that once these images are gone they could be gone for good.

P.S. Is there any chance we could get like a contact email or form or something for the wiki? If the concern is that it would waste a lot of staff time I'd be willing to volunteer to "triage" it so that the staff only gets the messages that genuinely concern them.

P.P.S. Special thanks to Lotxi for contacting me about this; I had only seen it happen once, so I didn't realize there was a problem until I heard from him.

If you download the file the complete picture is still there. It gives me an error trying to open it in XnView, but opens with Paint and the Win 7 Photo Viewer just fine.

All of those images fully load just fine on my end.

Are you on Firefox?

It to not load on Chrome for me, but loads on FireFox just fine.

Here is an example of what the first image looks like for me. (File:Npc xygoz.png)

Am I missing something? Images look fine on my screen:

That's actually really great news, as it means the content is still there, it's just that either:

A) it's corrupted in a way that only affects some people (it sounds like maybe only Chrome users), or
B) the problem is at the web server layer, not the filesystem

Either way I still think it's something significant enough to be solved, but I'll happily lower the severity level of this service ticket ;)

P.S. It looks like this isn't the first Chrome/PNG problem (c'mon Google get it together!), eg.

I guess the real question now is what changed? Did a new version of Chrome break things, or did the server admins (for instance) recently update some software that compresses images?

One thing I've been forgetting to ask, is our wiki software up to date? I believe the latest mediawiki version is 1.30 (dec, 12th 2017). With all the changes to browsers in the past year or two I'm wondering if we're missing some up to date support code.

---
edit: Tried the pages on Comodo dragon (chrome fork) & Pale Moon (firefox fork) images load fine on both.

As you said that's the latest version according to: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki

I think the wiki was out of date a few months ago, and then they updated the software when they gave us multi-category search (thanks again for that!)

Does this happen with most of the images on the wiki?
The only lead I'm finding is a possible relation to: MIME type: image/png

Here is a MIME type: image/jpeg Does that load correctly?

edit: seems like most if not all of the maps on the wiki are jpg
editedit: here is an NPC http://wiki.project1999.com/File:Npc...abbinsbort.jpg

I'd really rather not install chrome to test :(
edit: I looked some more,. I blame google.
