What is the playable area in Everquest?

Just saw this video and it got me thinking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80vctFJqoG8

What is the playable area of Project 1999 in square km?

Plus Luclin?

Plus Planes of Power?

I like it when they include oceans or bodies of water as part of the "playable" area, eventually they're just going to include the elevation as part of it's size.

For a lot of games its unnecessary but EQ water is, no pun intended, immersive. I remember when I moved on to DAoC and then WoW, how let down I was that water wasnt a thing at all other than looks

I don't know the sources for this guys numbers but the first three expansions according to him were a total of 141.6 square miles which is 366.742 square kilometers.

Edit: this would make it bigger than everything before burnout on OPs video

He explained how he got this on the second page:

To determine size, I looked at the max/min on both X & Y coordinates, and then taking the difference (and being careful with the +/- signs). For Overthere, X difference is 34391 and Y difference is 16299 = 560538909 ft^2 or 20.1 miles^2.

Widest zones:
#1 The Iceclad Ocean - 34391 ft
#2 Ocean of Tears - 6748 ft
#3 The Dreadlands - 16504 ft
#4 Western Plains of Karana - 16170 ft
#5 Timorous Deep - 13841 ft

Tallest zones:
#1 Timorous Deep - 23124 ft
#2 The Iceclad Ocean - 16299 ft
#3 The Overthere - 15732 ft
#4 Firiona Vie - 14045 ft
#5 Scorched Woods - 12896 ft
Last edit: I think the fact almost half of all of EQ1's area was developed between 1999 and 2001 says a lot about the change in quality of an "expansion" after classic. I think it speaks in its own way of what us on p99 actually love about that era.

They used to announce this for Kunark/Velious marketing, which I assume is why every damn outdoor zone is unnecessarily huge. No clue though. :o

When you start thinking about playable area, consider how small Felwithe is for a "city" and how insignificant the towers outside are where the newbie area guards stand :/

As a bard, I've run from North Ro to ToV because, why not! Once you take the raft from North Ro and zone into Iceclad, it takes 22 minutes at Selo's drum speed to run to Temple of Veeshan. A full EIGHT of those minutes is spent just crossing Iceclad before zoning to Eastern Wastes. At BARD speed.

For comparison purposes, the previous "biggest waste of real estate" zone was Western Karana, and takes FOUR minutes to cross it at bard speed. Iceclad is twice as wide as Western Karana /shiver
