Drug courts have been shown to be the most effective way of treating drug abuse and addiction. It is not locking people into prisons or jails, it is focused on rehabilitation and probation and taking responsibility for one's actions.

For those of you who havent heard of drug court, I recommend watching this (its very inspiring and explains in detail the program's successes):

They usually have some rationalization, like "hey sure I'm snorting a few vicodin here and there, but these are prescribed by real doctors! I'm no junkie". Fast forward 6 months and they're shooting heroin and sacrificing\selling everything they have for it.

So in that case, there's already kind of a lessening of the stigma just by something being "legal". People get addicted to their legally-prescribed opioid painkillers all the time. If heroin were legal, that stigma of being a homeless addict on the street would be greatly lessened and curious minded people would be more likely to dabble, almost certainly.

Like again, that's okay for weed. I *do* smoke weed, it's definitely not something you should abuse, but nothing is. But it's relatively mild for most adults to consume. So the question of legalizing it VS all drugs are completely different questions. Eliminating the black market for weed is worth the undercutting of the cartels it produces. But with something like heroin, it's honestly worth the war on drugs and all of it's shortcomings and excesses and abuses when you see what that drug actually does to people.

I have yet to find someone who is pro-legalization of drugs and who has also seen a family member become addicted to opiates

Opiates should be outlawed period. We’ve had two wars with the intent of securing the means of production of heroin so we can sell it at pharmacies, and doctors and big pharma know exactly what they’re doing when they prescribe them

I think they have their place, but like for end-of life terminally ill people in excruciating agony, or people with legitimate debilitating chronic pain that makes them unable to function. They do have legitimate medical uses, but holy shit if big pharma didn't throw all considerations of risk out the window when you're getting a prescription for 20 vicodin with three refills for a tooth extraction.

That's not nearly as common anymore, they are much more tightly regulated and doctors are hesitant to prescribe them because they'll come under intense scrutiny. But that's cold comfort for the people who got addicted in the 90s and 2000's from pill mills dispensing them like candy.

I can’t stand either tbh. Stoners are lazy and stupid. It’s fine to partake, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. If you’re smoking all day every day to the point where you’re retarded, you need to stop. Same with drinking. I don’t drink personally, but more power to you if you wanna have a drink or two here and there. You should never do something to the point that you get sloppy

When I broke my foot I had emergency surgery that involved 2 pins, a plate, and 6 screws being drilled into my bones. Stingy bastards sent me home with a whopping 10 mid strength oxycodones and a bottle of basically over the counter paracetamol. I rationed those oxy's like they were gold. Except for one night where I had the house to myself for a night. Took 2 oxys, drank a bottle of wine, and took my bard from 57 to 59 chain pulling for groups in the Hole. Zombie autopilot engage!

They were as cheap as water to make, and highly addictive. Doctors back in the 90’s were encouraged by pharma reps to push them for just about everything pain-related

So unethical, which is why if I recall some people went to prison for a long time over it
