I thought my co-worker was joking when he mentioned that the US is floating the idea of minting a trillion dollar coin and how that’s legally possible due to there being no limit on the amount one can mint in a particular medium, I think in this case platinum coinage

https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/news/tri...ling-solution/

This would be to raise the debt ceiling with a ver low risk of inflation or something

Before he could even finish explaining it I asked “and what if someone steals it?” and he said basically the USA would be super fucked

Then we bounced around ideas as to what you could spend it on that would incur the least amount of loss, since literally no entity would be able to give you change

We found out you could buy 48 United States air craft carriers. You could have your own fleet. You could also buy the space station. You’d still incur some losses because neither of those add up to 999 billion, but they seem to be the least amount of losses

Then we speculated HTF would you transport that thing to the treasury or whatever? In one of those Dunbar armored cars, or helicopter? I said the more commotion the more attention it would bring, the better plan would be to have a fat mall cop walk it over with it in his pocket. No thief would ever suspect that’s where the trillion dollar coin is

Well if you print 1 trillion $1 bills -- then lock them in a safe and never use them -- pretty low risk of those dollars inflating the economy. But the coin is more appealing for obvious reasons.

Can’t. Has to be a coin in this specific metal, since it’s exploiting a loophole that has no limit as to the amount of money the government can mint in that medium. Not sure if the article explained it, didn’t read the article. But that’s why it needs to be a platinum coin

Edit: here it is, from the article “ It's because a quirky law from more than 20 years ago seems to allow the administration to mint coins of any denomination without congressional approval as long as they're platinum”

in other words its a bullshit loophole. Which is fine, because the debt ceiling itself is kind of bullshit. I'm not that worried about it because the donor class isn't going to let a default happen.

Ya prolly not gonna happen but just fun to speculate what would you do with the trillion dollar coin? :)

JurisDictum 10-12-2021 10:51 PM

It would probably be better to just raise the ceiling. I mean that coin is just a talisman of DC dysfunction.

I guess it would be kind of funny to slowly build up a pile of coins as this crap continues over the years.

Yah, if I recall this stuff was happening during Trump’s term (and before?)

In fact I had an old meme that had Trump calling into tech support saying “the government isn’t doing what I want it to, what do you recommend?” And tech support saying “have you tried turning it off and then back on again?” And Trump’s eyes getting all wide like he hadn’t thought of that. But I gotta go on a jog and don’t have time to dig it up

But yah I remember these gov’t shutdowns happening before

imagine when gas is gone and its all electric, guys racing those things just point the car (with advanced AI assistance because wrecks in a bloodsport are bad). No transmission, no clutch. All human error has been removed from the program. Some of the cars are fully AI-controlled which caused a stink but people forgot about it shortly after.

You are mostly watching which nerd programed it the best. In fact he gets the trophy but the real drivers are never seen or heard from. They just show up for a minimum wage paycheck.

NASCAR is already white-collar af. E-Nascar consists of AI cars running in a perfect circle. You can root for the Mark Zuckerberg Facebook AI cars. Elon Musk image is on all the posters. It boasts a safety rating of 20 years without accident.

-man is replaced by a Steve Jobs iphone button but this was on its way when the 'flappy paddle' transmissions were introduced in F1. And to think some guys praise that stuff. Go get your thrills behind a desk.

What is wrong with conservatives these days? I don't care how hot your daughters are, it's still incest.
