It does seem apparent that putin doesnt want them in nato is because he thinks he can take them if they are not in nato (and nato is making that clear that is the case)

although, I think that a better president that didnt have an agenda to support nato, could have worked something out where it was a buffer zone between russia and nato, and there could have been no lives lost.
