The second biggest loser here is going to be China.

China now knows they will never take Taiwan militarily. It's diplomacy or nothing. They might get Taiwan eventually, but now they're gonna have to buy it and that's way more expensive.

The US is going to be showing all the nice Chinese invasion craft piled up in the harbor and the planes with paratroopers and the missiles on trains heading south and this time the entire world will believe them right away. And China's precious and fragile economy will crater right quick and the people will be very very angry.

I keep hearing on TV about the rag-tag underequipped badly trained Ukrainian army in the face of this highly trained well-equipped Russian force and how everyone is so surprised at how well they are doing.

So first of all, the Ukrainian army is NATO-trained. For the past since Crimea, there have been US/Euro people in there training them in everything, from c&c to doctrine to operational to tactical. While overall the Ukrainian army lacks the specialized and elite forces that characterize large national armies, their regular troops are better trained than their counterparts.

Second, the Ukrainian army has combat experience and has used all the weapon systems in actual operations. There are no Russian troops with any combat experience. Their last conflict was 8 years ago and due to extremely low retention rate (don't use conscripts!) all those veterans have cycled out. Meanwhile the Ukrainians have been rotating their units in and out of the Donbass for all that time, retaining a combat-experienced cadre.

Because yes, there has been a war going on since 2014. You can call it low intensity conflict, friction, probes, whatever. But real weapons were being used and real people were blown up.
