IDK how accurate that is. I never saw anyone call a magician a mage until after WoW came out. Actually remember getting cursed out for calling mages "magicians" on WoW when it first released and had people lecture me about mage meaning magic user.

According to WoW their mages are wizards, so like, IDK dude.

Ive seen "mage class" in various MMOs and MOBAs refer to basically any type of pure magic caster, the same way you have the fighter classes, priest classes etc.

i know what people mean when they say mage of course, for the same reason i know what a shammy or chanter means, but i dont think people were running around in 1999 calling magicians mages lol

i think that was picked up after the release of WoW even though it never originally referred to magicians

i just checked, and even everquest lore refers to miragul as a powerful mage btw even though we know him as a necromancer

naw tank mages existed b4 in the lord british game ultima onine and in a few other ones just ur a nerd and not a cool chad so u called urself a wizard

mage is shorthand for magician which contemporarily is not a magic user and is more a clever boi/girl and slight of hand user

but ya i think wow really turned it into an archetype, it was a class in EQ and the connotationoning of summoning stuff is a mage thing too from more of the conjuration school "conjurer' doesn't roll of the tung like 'magician'

And Enchanter made sense to me, magician was a bit of a surprise. I think they just felt it would be too powerful if wizards could be all 4 things or all 3 things. So they hacked out magician class.

considering the UI implimnetation i think they did the right thing that would be a lot of spells to juggle for an 8 gems slots

however they def should have kept wizards and mages the same and given them clarity instead of enchanters
