Why are whole-body deodorants suddenly everywhere?

Quote:

Different parts of the body make different kinds of sweat — and different kinds of smells
Not all sweat is created equal: Human bodies have two kinds of sweat glands, and their products are not exactly the same.

Apocrine sweat glands are typically concentrated in the places where hair grows during puberty — the armpits, the groin, and the butt. These glands make a waxy substance that certain bacteria love to eat, and it’s the byproducts of that microbial banquet that create the musky aromas most commonly associated with body odor.

“The sweat in our armpits is different — quite different — from the sweat that covers your body,” says Andrew Best, a biological anthropologist who studies sweat at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. That’s because the rest of your body is covered with eccrine sweat glands, whose product is a more watery, salty liquid that’s less appealing to bacteria but does a bang-up job of keeping us cool.

Eccrine sweat is what covers most of our body during exercise. It might occasionally evoke recently ingested food and drink, with particularly piquant notes after a garlic bread binge or a very boozy night. Still, because it’s not well-suited for bacterial consumption, eccrine sweat just doesn’t usually generate the odors that apocrine sweat does.

There is such a thing as dysfunctional sweating: About 10 million Americans produce way more sweat than their body’s temperature-regulating needs, either as a consequence of certain medical conditions or medications, or just because it’s the way they’re wired — a condition called hyperhidrosis. Other, less common medical conditions produce particularly pungent sweat.

But most of the sweat most people produce serves a positive biological function: “Sweating is almost always good,” says Best.

Humans are great at trying desperately not to be humans

Sweating is a great detox. Everyone should do some cardio at least once a week to clear out toxins etc.

These "whole body deodorants" just sound like some funky marketing for a problem that doesnt exist. You'll sweat anyway and if you don't sweat on a very hot day you should see a doctor.

I sweat a fairly disgusting amount of sweat but I assume that’s because I’ve lived my entire life in a very hot climate

On the very rare occasions where I’ve gone sometimes 3+ days without showering, I don’t tend to get smelly armpits until like day 4ish. And the amount of sweat I do working out seems to have either zero effect on this smell-timeline, or very little. Which I find odd

What is also something to consider when you have work out shirts and work out clothes is that the longer you’ve had a shirt that gets soaked with sweat on the regular, the less sweat it takes for sweat lines to appear. Just like body odor, visible sweat lines are a personal pet peeve I try to never have

So as someone who showers at least EOD if not every day, sweat lines are a bigger concern than BO

Oh I also swear by doing sauna as often as I can, up to daily but at least a few times per week. And I stay in there until I’ve done an adequate sacrifice to the sweat god

Not only are there numerous physiological benefits, but sauna is one of the last places on earth where people will randomly start talking to each other. Because myself and most sane people don’t bring their electronics into a hot sauna. Some people do and I think that’s stupid. Even if it could supposedly take the temp, why risk expensive electronics because you just had to watch the sportsball highlights? Come on

So most people have no electronics. Mine is always a bro’s only no girls allowed fort because it’s in the men’s locker room. But I’ve heard other places have co-ed setups

But just last week two bro’s were commenting how some of the new people here from the 6 closed local gyms are assholes. And I just had to jump into that conversation by raising my hand and saying I’m from one of those closed gyms. Then the dude said “oh no I didn’t mean you”. And I said “no worries, some people are assholes”

And then we talked for about 10-15 min about how screens are ruining our fucking lives. Honesty the ratio of my random irl conversations with strangers is like 90% saunas

Tonight I went to gym just to sauna and put my blasted ruined legs (from the half-m) in the jacuzzi for a while
