A user can gain a referral by attracting a new user to the vBulletin forum via a special referral link. A typical referral link looks a bit like this:

hxxp://www.yourwebsite.com/forum/index.php?referrerid=$userid

a referral means you told someone about the forum and they signed up. It's a good thing not a bad thing so dont have to worry about being banned for anything.
