Monk Tips

I thought I would share a few tips for Monks out there. Since these are all things I've learned since I started playing my Monk on Project 1999, I thought maybe some people out there are also playing a Monk for the first time or just didn't know these things from years ago playing.

1. Get several summoned bags. Then before you log off for the night, have someone duel and kill you. The summoned bags will stay on the corpse.

2. If you have a mob under 20% health, but you are also under 20% health, the mob will continue to attack instead of fleeing. If you FD and wait a few seconds, the mob will start to flee, then you can just pop up and kill him.

3. Special attack like Eagle Strike seems to have a chance of interrupting a caster. When fighting casters, I sometimes do not hit my special attack the moment it is available, but wait for the message "mob is casting a spell". It seems to help.

4. Casters are annoying when attempting to split pull. Pay very close attention to "Mob starting to cast a spell" message. If that shows in chat, do not Feign Death unless you have really high magic resistance. I can't tell you how many times I've died attempting to split casting mobs, they are still very tricky to deal with.

5. On splitting, you will need to wait for the 2nd mob to walk back to his starting spot. If he is still walking, and you get up and attack mob hovering over you, it doesn't matter how far away the mob is that is walking back. Only on rare occasions have I found this not to be the case.

6. If you are not near a bank, but need to sell and have a lot of coin weighing you down. Buy a gem from the vendor and resell it, it will use as much excess copper, silver, gold that you have. Better than destroying all those silvers and coppers.

7. Despite popular rumor, AC makes a big difference. Almost anytime a mob is mysteriously hitting me harder, 99% of the time my weight is over the limit when I check. Azure Sleeves should be one of your first purchases, the are 12 AC, 8 more than Wu's and I see them selling for 50pp.

8. Make a hot key for Feign Death, /doability 5. Next line /stand. I used this all the time when running places or in groups while waiting.

9. Raise that mend skill asap. It'll be tough early on, losing HP occasionally. Once at 100 skill, it never fails. If you use it during downtime, at least bind wound up to 50% first.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have the plat to get weight reducing bags, so how do you stay under 14 stone or whatever it is if you are going to carry food, water, and shurikens? I'm not able to get anywhere near that low.

Early on as a monk you should be carrying no bags, or at most 1 bag. Monks are extremely self sufficient for a while so don't worry about missing plat from fine steel and other random stuff, its not like you really need it anyway.

The gear will come with levels, levels come from not being over stone cap and getting your ass handed to you.

Rule #1. Find someone to give you some summoned bags. I usually can find a shaman or magician in EC to do this for free.

I guess I wanted more than just Mesh armor and hands as weapons. But I suppose you can be a sub par Monk in a group, it's less noticeable. Since I solo the majority of my time, the upgrades in my gear has helped immensely.

Great advice, that's the best light container early on. I still have one Large Sewing Kit that I use besides the summoned bags.

Log into eq -> Pull 2 mobs that are KoS to you -> Feign Death(successfully) -> Sneak (successfully) -> when ONE OF THE MOBS turns its back to you, stand up -> Be amazed.

OMG, that's awesome! Learned something new, one of the reasons I started this thread.

You can do some amazing shit with sneak my newly informed brotha. Once you start playing with it you can pull solo mobs out of packs of 4-5 with ease.
